Australia’s overnight win in the ICC World Cup second semifinal helped Nine to its highest Thursday share of 2023 and an easy rating victory. It was the network’s best Thursday share in survey since 2015 and included a main channel share double that of its nearest rival. The result saw all other network’s lose viewers and share for the night.

The headline number was almost 600,000 for the first innings coverage that could be adjusted later. Seven secured second place but with its lowest Thursday share of the year, down five while ABC, 10 and SBS all dropped by three points.

Home and Away was the top entertainment offering of prime time with a repeat of Abba Vs Queen that followed just making the top 20 for Seven. ABC debuted Bill Bailey’s Wild West Australia that averaged 320k.

10’s split schedule that featured soccer in three markets on the main channel saw The Project as the only top 20 entry as Australia’s 7-0 win against Bangladesh struggled to gain interest against cricket on Nine. 10 reported that it was the biggest Socceroos match of the year on 10.

The cricket dominated all night, thumping the FIFA World Cup qualifier between Australia and Bangladesh.

Very low figures for the last two episodes of Erotic Stories on SBS.

I look forward to the usual suspects trying to claim that football is a big sport that 10 should be showing every Wednesday night.

500k gets you a 40% share these days…

Again, Seven just don’t get cricket! How could you give up the rights to ODI cricket during the summer!!!

Even if the deal was joint with Fox as the rest of the summer is, it would still rate its socks off!!

Let’s see who bids for the new rights deal for the ICC tournaments moving forward.

Great night of sport on Nine.

It does if the competition is getting 200k

Bilateral ODIs are different from ICC tournaments.

However, a possible compromise is that Seven showing late night highlights of ODI matches in Australia, similar to the current broadcast deal in England in which Sky has exclusive live coverage, with highlights shown later on a FTA network (currently BBC).

Actually, it’s interesting when you look at that soccer result in Sydney

100,000 people is very respectable up against the cricket

I wonder how it would have fared on Wednesday up against two lame reality shows

Nine easily won all markets with Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth over 40% and Sydney and Melbourne just below.

Crazy that there is more interest in the Matildas than the Socceroo’s recently, love to see it.

They need to make a decision… they’re either the “Home of Cricket” or they aren’t.
To be honest, at the moment, they’re not the home of any sport of real note bar the AFL.

That’s a bit harsh, it wasn’t long ago a lot (including the public/non-MS users) were praising their refreshed and rejuvenated coverage, commentators and presentation included.

Yes, they’ve since changed their tune from say 2018 when everything was first announced and first summer, though that was a different management and I think another MS member (maybe mod OnAir or somebody) mentioned they’d heard or strongly believed it was upper management, rather than Seven Sport from a production level, who more or less, are still putting in a very solid effort, even outside summer.

COVID hurt, it costs more than when Seven had the tennis, is a loss leader, biggest events (Tests/Boxing Day and the like) out of prime time and along with other factors, perhaps foolishly, vented their frustrations via the press and public, including comments about TA and Nine too. Nine’s high rating 2020 and 2022 (Barty victory) also probably didn’t help.

But I think things may have settled a bit now and lots has been thrashed out, including publicly and eveybody sort of knows what to expect, with new broadcast deals locked and commencing over coming years. Let’s hold off the bashing a little I say

Seven totally get cricket and I look forward to seeing the figures for the Tests against Pakistani which will rate much higher than the 50 over stuff

I think you will find that this is what the Matildas will regress back to, probably within a year or so

I think I said the team putting the broadcasts together should be viewed separately from the exec level where deals for broadcast are largely done.
I still think the 7 product is largely good - although similar issue to Fox is the commentary talent is too thin.

Interestingly - we are probably at the point now 1 given live events are king on broadcast - where ODIs in the home summer would be well worth broadcasting again on FTA - if the price was right. Some time away now though!

So how do you think the socceroos would have fared on Wednesday Night up against Big Brother and MDYM?
