Thursday 16 March 2023

Considering the close contest all the way from the start including a draw, as well as being the supposed ‘hyped’ season opener, those AFL numbers seem rather weak, stakeholders would be hoping it was the weeknight factor, that they’ll grow tonight & as the next rounds approach and that it’s Kayo’s live streaming where a lot of the audience is now (although we may not see their internal data publicly again after SMH’s article on OzTAM’s ‘warning’ to Foxtel the other week about doing/claiming such).

The excuses and spin to protect this show is starting to wear thin.

Taskmaster and Gogglebox were directly up against the AFL and they managed a spot the top 20.

The Project doesn’t rate and doesn’t resonate with Australians. They don’t like it. For whatever reason, people do not want to watch this show.

I’ve mentioned this before; one of the main reasons that The Project 7pm number is down on a Thursday is because of Brisbane. There the NRL starts right on the dot of 7pm (until the end of DST) leading to a significant drop for The Project to about half its usual audience.

Gogglebox and Taskmaster don’t seem to be much affected and they are both aired against the footy.

It has been noted before that most programs go down in the ratings when they feature political interviews. Viewers are just not interested. I fast forwarded through that segment last night.

Gogglebox went from 479,000 the week before opening round of the NRL down to 416,000.

10 really need to look at shaking up their schedule and putting local news at 9pm/9.30pm instead. Sometimes Nine’s national late news gets 300k, there’s huge potential there.

They’re still not as dire as The Project. Being in the 400,000’s is great for 10.

The Project can’t do that.

The only defense I see for this show is here. No one else cares.

It was the #3 show in Adelaide only behind 7 News, and #7 in Perth despite the game starting at 4.20pm local time. I wouldn’t classify those results as low rating.

As for Sydney and Brisbane, I would assume the majority of viewers interested in AFL would opt to watch the game on Fox/Kayo rather than FTA.

The trend is, when politicians are on, numbers trend backwards. When 730 interviews either PM or Opposition Leader, even if it’s just Marles etc, they drop about 10-20% of the audience.

AFL took at least 50-100k from 730.

You’re reacting as if Seven didn’t win the night by a decent margin…

Not all, they are only getting as high as they are right now thanks to the news. This has been the case for the whole year.

Let’s be real about Seven this year, after 7:30, they are a basket case.

Idol is 3rd if not 4th most nights, wednesdays are just a complete :poop:show and if it wasn’t for Melbourne being so fixed on Football like Perth is to seven, than seven would actually be a network which would get a lot more attention in the areas of “what the hell is going on at Seven”.

Not matter which way you spin the seven ratings, it’s been a really poor year.

I’ll leave any further analysis/thoughts to you, but it looks like Nine’s alternatives in non-NRL markets were more successful than Seven’s in non-AFL markets? Whilst all actually relatively close in most markets, the biggest difference looks like in Sydney. I wonder if they will (can?) revert to x3 H&A, although that obviously hurts the show on 7Two in some markets (depending on AFL start).

Perhaps Seven especially and Nine aren’t that fussed, hoping AFL and NRL alone is enough to get the job done. Years ago when FTA was still high however, this wasn’t necessarily the case, with the market alternatives often rating fairly high.

It was extremely variable- the Badly Behaving Dogs show did well in Brisbane but in Perth 10 beat Nine. 10 even beat Seven in 25-54.

Seven heading for a win this week based on the current numbers in Sydney, its first of the survey.

Hey, the 9 O’Clock News is my idea that got bagged in here lol

I think it is a great strategy for Ten because the news cycle never stops

Que? More people watched the AFL in Sydney than watched the NRL in Melbourne Perth and Adelaide combined - and, usual, qualifier, the AFL game goes for an hour longer

Though still far more watched the AFL in Sydney and Brisbane on 7 than watched the NRL in Melbourne Perth and Adelaide.
