The 2023 AFL season kicked off on Thursday night with big audiences for Seven’s coverage seeing the network win the night with its highest overnight share of the year. With more than one third of the audience watching Seven, that saw second-placed Nine, while still competitive, down 3, 10 down 3, ABC down 2 and SBS down 2 in network shares compared to the previous Thursday.

Seven’s audience of 522,000 compares to the 2022 season launch on a Wednesday that had 548,000 and the 2021 Thursday opener that had 680,000. It is the lowest opening game rating since OzTAM combined the main channel with the multi channel results in 2016. The first Thursday night game of 2022 had 502,000. The result featured a massive 327,000 audience in Melbourne where it was the number one show.

Over on Nine, the NRL was down 15k with over half the audience from Sydney.

The top prime time entertainment offering was Gogglebox that was largely unaffected, down only 8k week-on-week. Earlier, however, Taskmaster dropped to a season low, below 300k for the first time.

ABC’s line-up featured a season low for 7.30 while Foreign Correspondent was also impacted by the increased competition.

Earlier in the night, Seven News had another win in Sydney with the 5-city numbers up week-on-week.

On Foxtel, NRL was slightly ahead of AFL with the AFL audience of 286,000 up on 2022’s opener that had 268,000 and 2021 that had 245,000.

Easy win to Seven thanks to the AFL, which finished in a draw between traditional rivals Richmond and Carlton.

Interesting that Home and Away ratings were shown twice (18th in main list, and 3rd in multichannels). The combined audience would have put the soap in 11th for the day ahead of the NRL.

Foxtel’s coverage of the NRL outrated the AFL season opener. That does not happen very often.

How much did seven just pay for AFL rights again? OMG these FTA figures for sport, when simulcasted on Fox are getting worse and will only get worse!

When will Seven learn, you join at the hip with fox and it will start to bite!

Ten slightly down, but against all the live sport it’s numbers are impressive, not bad for a network that “Murdoch/seven” said during the CA rights does have people watching.

and the majority of AFL’s ratings is from Melbourne - and low rating in every other state.

Does anyone know if the Fox Footy figures include viewers who watched on the Fox Sports 4K channel? Last night was the first ever Seven-produced game broadcast in 4K.

From Nine:

  • Thursday Night NRL was the No. 1 program in Sydney with all key demos
  • Thursday Night NRL wins the timeslot with Total People and all key demos across the 5 City Metro and in Sydney and Brisbane
  • Thursday Night NRL grew year on year (+27%) for Total TV
  • Thursday Night NRL was the #1 program live streamed yesterday against all broadcasters
  • Manly Sea Eagles v Parramatta Eels recorded a Live BVOD Audience of 54,000 (+68% YoY)
  • 9News wins timeslot with People 25-54 across the 5 City Metro and in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide
  • ACA wins 7pm timeslot with Total People, People 25-54 and People 16-39 in Sydney
  • Today wins breakfast slot with Total People across the East Coast and in Brisbane, as well as with People 25-54 across the East Coast and in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane
  • Today Extra is a timeslot winner with Total People across the 5 City Metro and in Melbourne and Brisbane

From 10:

Gogglebox Australia:

  • #2 entertainment show in total people.
  • #1 entertainment show in 25s to 54s.
  • #2 in its timeslot.

Taskmaster Australia:

  • #1 entertainment show in under 50s and 16 to 39s.

The Project is undoubtedly now in crisis territory. Nowhere to be seen despite having Albo on last night.

It was up against the AFL season opener. Politicians are rarely a drawcard for commercial TV unless there is some sort of scandal involved.

Considering the close contest all the way from the start including a draw, as well as being the supposed ‘hyped’ season opener, those AFL numbers seem rather weak, stakeholders would be hoping it was the weeknight factor, that they’ll grow tonight & as the next rounds approach and that it’s Kayo’s live streaming where a lot of the audience is now (although we may not see their internal data publicly again after SMH’s article on OzTAM’s ‘warning’ to Foxtel the other week about doing/claiming such).

The excuses and spin to protect this show is starting to wear thin.

Taskmaster and Gogglebox were directly up against the AFL and they managed a spot the top 20.

The Project doesn’t rate and doesn’t resonate with Australians. They don’t like it. For whatever reason, people do not want to watch this show.

I’ve mentioned this before; one of the main reasons that The Project 7pm number is down on a Thursday is because of Brisbane. There the NRL starts right on the dot of 7pm (until the end of DST) leading to a significant drop for The Project to about half its usual audience.

Gogglebox and Taskmaster don’t seem to be much affected and they are both aired against the footy.

It has been noted before that most programs go down in the ratings when they feature political interviews. Viewers are just not interested. I fast forwarded through that segment last night.

Gogglebox went from 479,000 the week before opening round of the NRL down to 416,000.

10 really need to look at shaking up their schedule and putting local news at 9pm/9.30pm instead. Sometimes Nine’s national late news gets 300k, there’s huge potential there.
