The Twelve

First, they remade thr Icelandic movie Rams in Australia, now they remake a Belgian series. There are no original ideas in Australia any more?

No. There are not.

That’s rubbish. Networks are just reluctant to back them.

Look at the Tim Minchin’s series Upright. Foxtel backed an original idea for once and it was successful in Australia and now finding audiences overseas. Same with Lambs of God.

This morning Screen Australia announced it had provided production funding for the series.

Good to read that it is still going ahead. I wonder how it will fare against the Belgian version (which initially aired here on SBS). I hope our version is just as good as the original.

The drama will now air in 2022.

Brian Walsh has revealed more info about the plot in the programmer’s wrap for TV Tonight.

The Twelve is very much an essay of the jurors studying the case whilst it’s being presented in the courtroom. It’s one of the biggest casts ever assembled for an Australian television series. You’ve got the A-storyline, which is the character of Kate (Kate Mulvaney) who is on trial for the alleged murder of her niece, and the defence attorney is played by Sam Neill. The prosecution is played by Marta Dusseldorp.

The A-storyline is quite a complex rich storyline, but it’s really about the jurors and their backstories, how they bring their personal lives and prejudices to the courtroom.

It’s a fascinating process to watch as a viewer. This is a big, big series. I don’t think there’s been a series on this scale on Australian television before.

Why are there 14 jurors?

Additional jurors are allowed for especially long trials - perhaps that is why. To ensure there are enough to form a verdict at the end, in case of drop outs through sickness etc.

But it is called “The 12”.

Only 12 form the jury that considers the verdict.
