The Masked Singer

Some good deflection here from Dolly.

It just sounded like her from the Weir chorus.

Now that Dannii or Jackie has made a case for Mullet being Axel, I can see it. Which is weird because I thought he may have been in season one, and was stalking his social media to see if he was AWOL around filming. Then this year he didn’t even occur to me.

Here are my predictions for tonight’s grand final.
Third place - Mullet (Axel Whitehead)
Second place - Vampire (Anastacia)
Winner - Dolly (Em Rusciano)

I don’t know how mullet is still there. Kebab was way better.

I’d really like to see Vampire (Anastacia) win.

What a great season. Well done Ten.

Osher said in a tweet “see you in 2022”.

Just wait for the confirmation at 10’s upfronts later this month.

But you don’t have to wait. Spoiler alert. He told you.

Em Rusciano hasn’t posted on social media yet. She’s prob waiting for WA to see it

Serious? It’s all over everything. And there’s even an extra podcast already on air.

She posted like an hour ago? Your Instagram must still be down

The top three (Anastacia, Em and Axel) all posted on social media after the finale finished in Sydney and Melbourne.

I correctly tipped Axel to finish third but congratulations to winner Anastacia (definitely worth spending two weeks in hotel quarantine in Sydney to take part). She and Em both have great voices.

Anastacia Wins The Masked Singer Australia.

Global Singing Superstar Revealed As Vampire.

International singing sensation, Anastacia, has been crowned the winner in tonight’s fang -tastical Grand Finale of The Masked Singer Australia .

The stakes were high, but the American singer-songwriter took out the coveted title ahead of singers Em Rusciano (aka Dolly) and Axle Whitehead (aka Mullet).

For her final solo performance, Vampire sunk her teeth into Live and Let Die by Paul McCartney, and our crack unit of powerhouse detectives Dannii Minogue, Dave Hughes, Jackie O and Urzila Carlson took their final stabs at who was behind the Vampire mask.

Dave and Urzila were unsuccessful in their guesses of Shakira and Sheryl Crow, but it was our unstoppable celebrity sleuths, Jackie O and Dannii Minogue, who ended their winning streak on a high, with the correct placement of singer Anastacia as Vampire.

When host Osher Günsberg asked why she joined The Masked Singer Australia , Anastacia said: “I was actually asking myself that question when I saw the costume for the first time. I was terrified to be the Vampire.”

For second runner-up Axle, he embodied his character of the Mullet by sporting the exact same haircut.

Axle said: "It has been such a blast to get in touch with my inner bogan and be able to just take him on. What a character!”

For runner-up Em, she fought back tears as she described how much being Dolly has meant to her.

Em said: "I haven’t been able to sing live in 18 months. I am a live performer so this has been magic. It’s put all the magic back into my blood. This has been the best experience of my life.”

The ratings did seem to drop quite a lot this year. I wondered if next year they could consider staggering out the masks a bit as well? We get 12 masks across 2 episodes and that’s it (minus Kyle which was great). Maybe start with 4-5 each night for the first 2 episodes and adding in a new wildcard during episodes 3-6.

That strategy might also convince bigger celebs to commit if the episodes they were required was slightly less.

Also can we please not have Jack Vidgen and Alli Simpson types appearing across two franchises in the same year! Otherwise it was a great series and Anastacia’s touching speech at the end was a wonderful and fitting conclusion.

Em and Axel were on Studio 10 this morning to talk about their performances during this season.

Yeah I think that they need to shake up the format again next year. And could definitely play around with the groupings in different ways. I’d also like to see a couple of different types of masks, like duos in the mix. They’ve done that in the US.

Another thing is that when contestants are eliminated they basically make the assumption that we know who they are. I’d like to see a to proper 30 second package on them when the mask comes off rather than just Osher screaming out random points about them. It might then make you realise you do know who it is if you saw some career highlights for clips and stuff about them.

Also give contestants the opportunity to perform without their mask to their own songs (if they are a professional singer). How great would it have been to end that finale with Anastacia out of her mask singing I’m Outta Love or Left Outside Alone? Or Macy Gray doing I Try? It feels like they get these people there but they are hidden and then as soon as the mask comes off it’s over quickly.

Hopefully having audiences and crowds voting can give it a bit more life too.

Er, Osher.

Agree, it just hard cuts at the end after the artist sings a few lines. Would be nice if they did a goodbye after so it doesn’t end so abruptly.

No doubt with softening ratings since launch, the network and prodco will hopefully be looking at ways to improve the show next year and hopefully having audiences again will help.

Agree 100%. I think a journey package like with X Factor/Idol including some narration from the celeb and flashbacks to them getting into the mask and singing would be really great.

Yep that’s exactly what is lacking. Often a mask is revealed and my friends are all texting me a “Who?”. Ben Lee for example was one of them but if they had a clip showing career highlights and behind the scenes stuff to one of his songs like ‘Catch my disease’ a lot of people would recognise that song. Integrating Behind the scenes stuff into a quick short clip too would be better than that filler episode.
