The Latest (2018-2024)

Or they good give the show a priority spot and program around it. It’s on at 10:30pm every night it’s not that hard.

I’d like to see the latest at 9.30 a few nights a week.

Can anyone really name one 9.30 show on 7?

The issue is - others have explained here - when late news is on earlier viewers switch off after it - as late news tends to be a reason to end the night

Not entirely sure if that’s true, but does make a bit of sense

If 7 did a 7pm panel/news show like The Project, they could replay a that after the 10.30 news. That would be a good flow on and take them up to 11.30.

If they did it for an hour 9:30-10:30 and had something worthwhile afterwards to keep attention, not sure what that is but I’m sure research and programming would know, it might work. 30 mins is too short to hold viewers.

I don’t understand this reasoning, people have shorter attention spans these days, so longer programs should reduce the potential audience watching the entire program, unless the target is 40+.

It’s FTA TV, whether you like it or not, the target is always 40+

I think The Latest could work as a 45-60 minute show, if the regular panel discussions still occurred. Or have in depth interviews.

I said exactly that when the program first began. It includes very little sport, so plenty that could be included to make it 45 min plus.
And I agree, the panel discussions were great. Bring them back.

It’s not supposed to be a proper bulletin ala 6pm, nor would I as a viewer be as interested in watching such tedious content if it was, rather a faster-paced whip around, with a few expanded stories like the third segment interviews they were doing. I still occasionally find myself fast-forwarding bits to squeeze it into a tighter package.

Last thing we need is 10+ mins of sport similar to 6pm. They do already reference sport, but the items where it is big enough rather than filling out time because they have a whole segment on it. That is part of the attraction of this program.

the only problem is that it is not on air. brand credibility issues if not on for 2 weeks during Olympics. Same for Talking Footy. Hard to understand decision making process here

I’d be interested to know, with no The Latest or 9Late News, if 10’s Late News has improved in the ratings?

Doubt it. Most are watching the Olympics. And most wouldn’t even know 10 has a late news bulletin.

I am recording and watching it in lieu as I have been doing recently with the Thursday and Friday editions, although I find the occasional host commentary (not exclusive, they unfortunately all seem to do it these days every so often) and some slightly lefty-skewed reports a little grating, when I am only interested in a tight news wrap.

But I do really like the statistics they occasionally present about the economy, and the differences across the country, a real positive.

The Latest is returning after the Olympics on Monday 12 August.

Will it return to Thursdays too?

The Latest back tonight after its Olympic hiatus.

The Latest has been pulled from next Wednesday night’s schedule (it was to air at 11:45pm) so only 3 bulletins will air that week. The following Wednesday it gets a 10:30 pm time (depending on how much The Front Bar over runs).

The “Final Frame” video finished prematurely tonight.
