No - the point is it’s not really something to be “better than”. It’s lifestyle TV.
And also could be argued that BH&G is a big ad for Bunnings Warehouse and other companies like tools, gardening and I think Woolworths as well.
Still don’t get your point. I think the original post was saying that the journalist and storyteller should be on something better than this big ol’ ad .I think that is a valid point.
Well, if there was a “better” job offered then Melissa Doyle would take it.
The point is thinking anyone is ‘above’ this sort of programming is dated. There’s a major clamouring for lifestyle content targeted at the older female generation. As a familiar broadcaster, she is the perfect person to front it.
Melissa can still tell stories on this show, I’m sure there will be segments that allow her to do that.
Sunrise told a variety of stories, some of which verged on paid promotion or silliness. Melissa - as a quality broadcaster - was able to adapt to both, which she will here.
Does it say something about the wider media landscape she can’t? Probably, but I’m not going to begrudge her making an income on something that seems incredibly harmless.
The criticism isn’t at Mel for taking it I don’t think. It’s more that this is all she was offered on TV. I agree that she will do well in this, bring in any hope of an audience and carry the show. There is no question. But a bit like Kylie Gillies on TMS and Joh Griggs on Better Homes, who do a great job, but they are capable of much more. Sunrise was live TV, has news and heart stories. It is not strictly lifestyle (or likely to be shafted) like this.
I had my reservations when first announced about the show airing on Friday nights - rather than on a Saturday night. Then thought that Friday’s might be okay, especially since it’s “lifestyle night” anyway on 7TWO in Melbourne and Adelaide. Better Homes to House of Wellness to Escape to the Country to Bargain Hunt etc.
In Sydney, Brisbane and Perth, it pushes the late night movie to a 9.30pm start, making the end time to close to midnight for that much needed late night share (this Friday is Farmer Wants A Wife repeats at 9.30)
That was indeed my point in saying she was better than this.
I’m just glad to have Mel back on our screens.
This is Your Life should never have been wound up. It was going well and a new take on a classic program.
I think Seven wasted a golden opportunity by not showing any promos for this show during Collingwood v Essendon AFL match this afternoon.
I’m not sure that’s the target market?
The primetime show will be targeted at a general demographic. Some of the massive audience watching the footy in the afternoon would be interested to tune in tonight.
The AFL/Friday night Football will presumably be more of interest to those fans watching today’s match than would be inclined to watch a wellness show.
Yeah I don’t see footy lovers being interested in a prime time infomercial.
Can’t say I’ve noticed the infomercial aspect yet.. or any reference to Chemist Warehouse?
9.28 a shampoo ad that finished with “available at Chemist Warehouse ”?
And a sponsor board that said, “brought to you by Telfast.”
Fair enough. Regardless though it’s still probably not something that would be likely to attract football fans when an actual game is being played at the same time.
I didn’t make it past the first ad break. It seems so fake and scripted.
A TV show with a script. How outrageous! You thought TV presenters just go on TV and chat?
Sam Wood and Shane Crawford doing pushups within 20 seconds, then tipping their right arm into a bucket of ice water, didn’t seem scripted.
Obviously not. I wasn’t really paying attention to what i said so i apologise. But i meant they were trying too hard. Like as if they practiced all the jokes before hand. and it was soooo overkill.
