This post was brought to you by Channel 10!

Hugely relevent given what’s happening in Mildura. It’s a sign of things to come.

What’s happening in Mildura?

The Network 10 affiliate JV station is closing in June.

Oh yes it is, i thinm the enitre broadcast industry is going to go under soon apart from those that are government funded and those that are hyper local

Wow, so does that mean that there will only be 7 & 9 affiliates in Mildura? Could Southern Cross Austereo get the licence like the rest of regional Victoria?

(EDITED: removed stuff about SEN which was meant for another forum).

I wonder if we might ultimately end up with what is basically the reversal of aggregation?

There is a real danger that we end up with a hodge-podge of arrangements if the Government simply allows broadcasters to hand back their licences en masse.

It’s interesting that Mildura has two different licensees, while some other areas such as Griffith only has one.

It’s also interesting that Mildura wasn’t included with the rest of Victoria for aggregation. Back in the pre-aggregation days, the Mildura commercial station was part of a network of stations which included Bendigo’s and Gippsland’s commercial station.

With Anchorage pulling out of the ARN deal to buy SCA due to the regional networks, it seems that nobody wants them. Hypothetically if SCA cannot find anyone to buy the stations and they lose more and more money, could they go the nuclear option and close the television network like what is happening in Mildura?

It would end up leaving regional areas with 2 commercial channels, with some ending up with just 1 such as Tasmania, Central Australia and Darwin. Guessing the only commercial network (WIN/Imparja/9) would have to take AFL etc. in that scenario, or even ABC/SBS.

I would hope a digital switch off wouldn’t happen, but I am getting the feeling that it could happen in the near future, especially now what is happening with Mildura.

I think commercial broadcasters will have 4 channels and ABC and SBS will merge and become a 6 channel model by 2040 (and probably sooner)

It hard to say with confidence that Ten will be around by then, but the two most likely scenarios if they do is that Ten could then be owned by Newscorp (if legislation was changed to permit it) or by WIN Television (albeit unlikely as WIN is back as Nine affiliate across most FTA regional markets)

All scenarios that have been thrown around for 20 years but never happened.

Streaming wasn’t around 20 years ago though.

And some places with none, as SCA are the solus operator in Spencer Gulf and Broken Hill.
