Clever
Top story on Nine News Melbourne tonight that the network and Newman have parted ways, reporter Brett McLeod said as long as he has Twitter it wonât be the last we hear from him.
Cannot believe that lead the 6pm news in Melbourne. Fucking hell GTV, what a stupid editorial decision.
Anyway, good riddance.
How Sam Newmanâs career at Nine should be remembered, with thanks to TV Tonight for putting this list in their article:
With Alan Jones and now Sam Newman gone, hopefully Nine can now figure out how to mutually and amicably end their association with Ray HadleyâŠ
Totally agree it is ridiculous but unfortunately here in Melbourne for many years any major story involving AFL current or former players takes precedence over real news stories especially on Seven and Nine.
Thank god he is gone!
Well, he was the star of the stationâs highest rating show for the best part of 20 years.
He did well for Nine in the 90s and early 2000s but times have changed and a lot of Sams antics are from a time long gone.
Problem with Sam is his involvement in social media, he really should have stayed away - wasnât worth the trouble. He also had a habit of picking unnecessary fights which added in what some call his irrelevancy. Some were fine but others were simply there to cause provocation.
I guess this all but rules out the Grand Final Footy Show this year, at least in its Rod Laver Arena shiny floor production format.
I think Nine will go for a scaled back, studio-based version instead this year, with Eddie hosting and cast members from Footy Classified and Sunday Footy Show appearing on a panel.
According to TV Tonight, Nine gave Newman an ultimatum about that:
On Friday afternoon he was offered the option to quit Twitter and his podcast, and see out his contract on the Sunday Footy Show for the remainder of the year. It was not to be.
Sam Newman revealed to Sunday Herald Sun that he received a phone call just after 3pm on Friday when he was called by Nineâs Director of Sport, Brent Williams, while he was driving in inner Melbourne. Unlike the TV Tonight article, Sam was not given an ultimatum nor asked to stop using Twitter nor to cease his podcast.
The station rang me and said: âWe are getting a bit of blow back from some of your commentsâ and I said: âWell, I donât want to put the station in an invidious position, anymore than I have in the pastâ.
I said: âI am very happy, if it will solve anything for you, very happy to withdraw forthwith from appearing on the network.â
They said: âWell, that would be absolutely acceptable and would be a good way to resolve the matter.â
Yeah, I have my doubts about whether thatâs exactly how the conversation went⊠but anyway, good riddance.
Newmanâs comments about race have only continued since the news of his exit on Friday.
Over the weekend, he referred to COVID-19 as the â#ChineseVirusâ, stood by his comments that AFL players didnât know why they were kneeling, and told Australian-Brazilian AFL player HĂ©ritier Lumumba to âstop pulling your dickâ after Lumumba said Newman is âconsistent with his bigotry, unwavering with his prejudice, and unapologetic with his tone deafnessâ, and one of the reasons he refused to appear on The Footy Show.
The Footy Show grand final spectacular is back this year, to be hosted by Rebecca Maddern and Shane Crawford, with Tony Jones, Billy Brownless, Nathan Brown, Matthew Lloyd, Damian Barrett and Kane Cornes. It will also act as a telethon for charity My Room.
The special will air on Friday, October 23, at 7.30pm in Victoria, Tasmania, SA and WA.

The annual My Room Telethon was mentioned on this morningâs show and of course it will be slightly different this year because of COVID, also Tony Jones said he was hosting and Billy said itâs in todayâs paper that Rebecca is hosting⊠sounds like Tony hadnât been told!
My guess is that Rebecca and Shane will be hosting the Telethon part of the evening.
Tony Jones again walked off the set this morning when footage of him kissing Bec Judd on Nine News Melbourne set was shown.
