Perhaps they’re trying to find an Erin Molan or Yvonne Sampson type equivalent (who both do well with Nine’s NRL coverage) for the AFL Footy Show? It’s never seemed to have had much of a female presence on air.

When is this show on? Is it only on in Victoria? And before you say it, I know I can watch it on 9NOW. Don’t like sport but would attempt to watch this because of Bec.

It’s a surprise that Bec is joining the show but l’m sure she will do well in hosting role.

Usually a delayed telecast that screens straight after the NRL Footy Show in NSW and Qld.

Pity that Nine could find a new presenter for the NRL Footy Show :grinning:

Here is the media release:

REBECCA MADDERN JOINS THE AFL FOOTY SHOW

Rebecca Maddern joins The Footy Show team on Thursday 7 April at 2016.

Channel Nine today announced Rebecca Maddern is joining the network as co-host alongside James Brayshaw on Australia’s longest running AFL entertainment program, The Footy Show.

Maddern, an award-winning reporter who has an accomplished 15-year career in the media as a journalist and presenter, is excited to be joining The Footy Show team.

“I have been a fan of the show for many years and I am thrilled to have a new challenge that allows me the opportunity to use my footy knowledge and work alongside some of the best in the business,” said Maddern, who is also the Geelong Football Club’s number one ticket holder.

Maddern started her career as a sports reporter for Triple M Melbourne. She rapidly worked her way up to read the radio news on some of the biggest stations in Melbourne, including Triple M and NOVA.

Maddern moved into television in 2002, working for the Seven Network, and quickly established herself as a first-rate reporter, winning one of journalism’s most prestigious awards in 2003, a Quill Award for her reporting of the Victorian bushfires.

She has hosted the 6.00pm news, been a correspondent for Sunrise, and handled presenting and reporting duties on a number of sporting events, including the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, The Australian Open, the Melbourne Cup, and the glitz and glamour of the AFL Brownlow Awards night.

Channel Nine Melbourne’s Managing Director, Ian Paterson, said: “The Footy Show has been entertaining Australian audiences for 22 years and whilst its history has created an enormous legacy we think it’s now opportune to reset it for its long-term future. Having Rebecca come on board to co-host with her own perspective is a relevant decision, and we’re really excited at the prospect of what her dynamic personality will bring to the show.”

Channel Nine Melbourne’s Head of Production and Programming, Tim Cleary, said: “I’ve always felt Rebecca was capable of hosting her own show. She loves footy, she’s an accomplished journalist and presenter, and her personality and sense of humour suits the show. We’re excited to have her fronting The Footy Show with James.”

Rebecca joining the AFL Footy Show certainly opens up a whole world of opportunity for her. She could even become the new host of Carols by Candlelight by the end of this year (so no need to fly Karl and Lisa from Sydney to host the event anymore). Will be interesting to read the view of The Age’s Caroline Wilson who appeared on the Footy Show once before and is now a member of Footy Classified.

Would have thought Caro couldn’t have cared less about TFS regardless of who is on.

I think in time Bec’s new role will lead her to other hosting opportunities at Nine maybe even occasionally appearing on Sundays Wide World Of Sports.

Is this effective from this week?

Next week:

Thanks I didn’t read the headline rather the article. Thanks.

I imagine she could fill in on Footy Classified when Caroline Wilson is absent (she usually has 2-3 weeks off mid season) so Bec could be the perfect fill-in, especially now that former fill-in Damian Barrett has “replaced” Garry Lyon. Caro also normally covers the Olympics for the Age newspaper so will most likely need several weeks off Classified while they are on

I’m not sure if I am a fan of Damian Barrett. Saw him on the AFL website taking over Garry’s hosting duty and it felt too staged. Garry Lyon was a brilliant host. I hope he can get the help he deserves and return soon. Bloody media is making it too hard for him to mend bridges.
