The Circle

The US and the UK version pretty much had the same final 5 and same winners

Trevor - Felix
Chloe - Manrika
Courtney - Andy
River - sayed
John - Tom

Think this is a bit of a shock but Channel 4 have announced that The Circle won’t be continuing:

Seems like a weird decision. Why would you can something that is growing?

Truly Bizarre.

No doubt will land somewhere else.

Hello Channel 5

Or even Netflix, since they hold worldwide rights.

The same Twitter account says Broadcast Now is reporting that production is in talks with Netflix about a UK version.

On the one hand it seems incredibly short sighted - it was growing every year and was highly regarded by those watching.

However sadly it seemed inevitable - it was growing but very slowly from a very low base, and though highly regarded by those watching quite simply not enough were. That said though I can’t see C4 replacing it with anything that rates better - just content that costs less.

Apparently it was too expensive. They were trying to negotiate a better price but the production company wouldn’t budge. It will be picked up somewhere.

Cough Netflix Cough

The Circle is moving from the UK to Atlanta.

shame we never got to see a local version of this format…

The more recent seasons on Netflix haven’t been as good as the original FTA versions (IMO).

It’s similar to Seven’s Big Brother. Netflix is pre-recorded months in advance, the UK FTA version was the previous day. This made it so much better for audience participation.

Netflix bought the rights in all territories, didn’t they? Am surprised we haven’t seen other versions pop up tbh.

But unlike BB, the Audience voting was not a major part of the series. And the 3rd UK series was pre-recorded (and was my favourite of the franchise).

There might have been a twist or two that involved a viewer vote (vote for the next new contestant or vote for the next influencer who will evict a contestant, etc) as well as a secondary prize for the public’s favourite finalist, but it was not a vital part of the format.

Yes - feels like that was a huge misstep by the production team considering what was to come in 2020 and how covid safe their format was - I think it would have got picked up in multiple territories if it hadn’t been already.

The Netflix version has absolutely been saved by being a UK production over the last few years so hope the bad habits of US reality shows don’t creep into the edit now it’s produced stateside.

I see the latest Netflix version of The Circle has the ultimate catfish - an AI chatbot as one of the participants.
