The Cheap Seats

Most of the Goggleboxers loved it. Even the two oldies. Only the Dalton mum didn’t find the chasing protestors bit funny.

With Lana Murphy? This weeks episode, which featured a follow up to this, was hilarious.

Yeah, all the Goggleboxers loved it except Mama Dalton.

She isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed so she wouldn’t even understand it.

Given some of the comments they make on the show (many of Holly’s are really concerning…), I’d really like to think my tastes in TV are a bit better than those of The Dalton’s on Gogglebox!

So why aren’t they? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Well you presumed wrong. I honestly don’t even know why they reviewed Cheap Seats on Gogglebox because it doesn’t really translate. The Cheap Seats is full of short sharp clips back to back with short sharp commentary in between. I wouldn’t even have time to sit and discuss them like the Goggleboxers did between clips.

However the fact that most on Gogglebox seemed to enjoy the show must say something.

Yeah I disagree with the notion of The Cheap Seats being what’s wrong with Australian comedy. On the contrary I think it’s a fascinating little show.

Yes it might look simplistic (being just short commentary alongside news clips) but a lot of the humour is derived from the style of HYBPA which is brilliant in itself. It’s very relevant and is something nice and light to watch after a long day.

Yeah, I think this is the key point which has been overlooked here. The cheap seats is funny, the humour just didn’t carry across all that well to Gogglebox.

I mean, think about it, they’re providing commentary on someone else’s commentary about various events. It’s almost like comedic Chinese whispers, by the end of the second time that joke is made and analysed again it’s lost it’s magic.

I watched the episode they reviewed and saw the Gogglebox episode and definitely thought it was funnier as it was presented on The Cheap Seats.

Was about to jump in and defend the show, but what’s the point? I watched it again tonight after Gogglebox and it’s still just as good the second time round. Each to their own (and I wouldn’t be taking someone’s word for it who hasn’t bothered to watch it before criticizing it), but it’s top notch comedy. Enough said.

Part of the appeal of it for me is the fact that it does focus so heavily on the media itself. The Alan Jones jokes are always great, and I like all the little digs at the rival networks. For instance, on Tuesday night, there was a clip which showed how the ABC covered the tornado near Bathurst and the ABC reporter was showing disbelief over the fact that kayaks were found in a dam. That kind of dry humour appeals to me.

It’s really the perfect show to watch if you’re interested in the media at all (like all of us here are) and like a bit of a comedy. I still prefer HYBPA out of the two tbh, but it doesn’t have the same media focus that The Cheap Seats has.

Some of the jokes can come across as a bit ‘try-hard’ at times, but otherwise, it’s an excellent show and I can see it growing into something big in the coming years. Mel & Tim are great as hosts too.

There were quite a few funny ABC clips on this week’s show such as the one where a reporter doing a live cross outside NSW Parliament was close to a car that was reverse parking.

About the show itself, one thing I’ll add to what others have said about it is I really enjoy how self-deprecating Mel & Tim are about themselves, the show and Channel 10. A great example of that was how Tim claimed the small desk TCS uses is due to the Making It contestants not having enough timeslots.

I assume this show will be renewed next year. It’ll be interesting to see how it goes into 2022. Will it be May-November like HYBPA? Or year round??

I think Titus O’Reilly has really gotten a lot more into it. I think he needs a bit more energy in his delivery, but he’s improved vastly from the first episode each and every week.

I agree. He’s neen really great at taking the piss out of himself too which works well on this type of show.

Surely this wins as the best new show on FTA for 2021?

I liked how the Goggleboxers watched this and commented on the inception of it cause technically Cheap Seats is Gogglebox in a studio with written jokes.
