The Chase Australia

While it’s sad Andrew O’Keefe’s life went downhill. I much prefer Larry over him as host. I like Larry’s dad jokes, funny comments about the chasers and his rivalry with Grant Denyer.

One good thing about Larry as host is he doesn’t wave his hands around when reading out most of the questions during the cash builder and final chase rounds. That’s what Andrew O’Keefe did and it’s the only thing most people on this thread didn’t like about him as host.

Since Seven only air new episodes Monday’s and Tuesday’s now, I much prefer to watch Tipping Point when it comes on at 5:00pm. New episodes of that show air Monday-Thursday. I still watch the new episodes of The Chase on 7Plus when I can.

Not sure why The Chase is still persisting with the Money Spinner at the end of the show. It adds very little to the viewer.

Also, the timing of the “news update” changes a lot lately. Sometimes, it’s before the contestants 2-minutes begins. Other times, it’s between the contestant and Chaser’s time. And the news-update is way too long, for what is usually repeated just 2 minutes later when the News actually starts.

Can they just be done with the stupid news update? People are well aware the news follows, has no impact on ratings.

I don’t know many other broadcasters around the world that does this.

I feel like the Australian version has seen better days now

The show thrives when you get high final chase scores and close wins/losses - something that was in abundance in the early days. Now it’s very rare, possibly a mix of casting problems and also noting the chasers are only continuing to get better almost ten years in. Refresh of the cast perhaps?

Larry is great though lacks the energy of his Price is Right days - he works best with a studio audience to bounce off

The spinner is a miss, Seven clearly saw the coin drops of TP and thought “how can we copy that?” without considering how it might hurt the format

An issue Seven face is that there’s no “hot” new format waiting in the wings as an obvious replacement (something both they and Nine had the virtue of spotting at 3pm), at least not yet. Any replacement risks doing even worse

They did attempt to compete with Nine’s Pointless/ Tipping Point UK double by airing Catch Phrase UK—which had previously aired on 7TWO as a summer filler—alongside The Chase UK until recently. Catch Phrase was originally a Nine format when it last aired in Australia, and it was clearly being considered by Seven either as a companion to or a replacement for The Chase Australia. However, the UK version flopped again and was quickly dropped.

Seven is now teasing Mega Money Win, as shown on the network’s promo aired during Australian Idol grand final decider last night. From TVCynic’s screencap:

It just defeats the entire point of the show. Much better to put the budget of that into higher offers from The Chaser.

Do we think the shows had its day? Seven might launch a new game show in the 5pm slot?

I wonder what show though.

I thought they might’ve had their eye on Catch Phrase given they were trying it earlier in the day…

Maybe The 1% Club could air at 5pm weeknights?

It would be great if when SEVEN replace The Chase, they gave an original concept a go. There are so many reruns/repeated formats that have a shelf life. Go with something Australian!

The News at 5 :stuck_out_tongue: In succession pf The News at Noon, the News at 4, and the News at 6.

In all seriousness though , The Chase will stay until the end of the year. And perhaps next year too. No need to be in panic mode. Yet. But they do need a plan for a succession though. Would it need to be a one hour game show though? A fast pace local 5.30 game show. With perhaps a US quiz at 5?

Maybe not panic mode.. but it’s seriously failing now in Brisbane. Half of the audience of TP, at a time when 7 News needs the best lead in with a new (soon to be returning) presenter.

Oh, i see. Thanks for the update re Brisbane. I wasn’t aware it was that far behind.

A big rethink for the shows future. And not just adding more unnecessary gimmicks

Seven need to be looking at alternative options now. This process should have started late last year.

I think The Chace is now a tired format. Seven need to look at new formats for 5.00pm.

Come the end of this year, The Chase would’ve run for the same amount of years (10) as one of its predecessors on Seven, Deal or No Deal (which of course is now in another series on 10).

Even DOND started to become weak in its final year or so in 2012, with Nine’s Hot Seat after a few seasons began to take charge with Eddie McGuire. That’d continue to 2016, with DOND’s successor Million Dollar Minute no match and struggled, though to Seven’s credit they persisted. From memory some DOND re-runs also aired in 2013? But could be wrong. Seven also tried The Price Is Right with Larry Emdur I recall.

DOND (OG) and Chase both had great decades respectively of dominance and helped shape, stabilise or resurge the network. But perhaps Seven will indeed start to think about the future of the timeslot over the next year.

The final new episodes aired shortly before Million Dollar Minute - then AFAIK repeats aired in the 5pm slot until The Chase began. In March 2014 it was announced that they wouldn’t produce any new episodes of Deal or No Deal.

I think this period was also when Ten ceased new episodes of Ready Steady Cook (OG), by then hosted by Colin Lane. Repeats continued for quite some time.
