New celebrity adventure series The Big Trip revives the great Aussie road trip

Eight stars of screen, sport and comedy embark on the Great Aussie Road Trip with a twist in the brand-new adventure series, The Big Trip, premiering 8.30pm, Wednesday 13 November on Channel 7 and 7plus.

Hosted by comedian Dave “Thorno” Thornton, The Big Trip sees four pairs of celebrity friends set out on an epic adventure across the Australian outback, with just two weeks to make it from the Great Australian Bight to Sydney’s Harbour Bridge.

The original format turns road tripping into a competitive sport, with the celebs facing high-stakes challenges at every turn, as they compete for the chance to gift $300,000 of hybrid and EV cars to some lucky fans.

What starts as a love letter to Australia and its larrikin locals, twists and turns through white-knuckle, nail-biting moments to hilarious shenanigans, as alliances form, betrayals brew and scandals erupt with teams going to any lengths to claim victory.

The four teams of celebrity pals competing on The Big Trip are:

The Competitors Olympic Gold medallist and Australian Survivor contestant Lydia Lassila and actor turned Australian Survivor winner Pia Miranda

The Performers “Covergirl comedian” and 2024 Dancing With The Stars finalist Nikki Osborne and Underbelly star Gyton Grantley

The Stylists former The Block contestants Mitch and Mark

The Comedians TV WEEK Logie Award winner Dilruk Jayasinha and fellow comedian Anthony ‘Lehmo’ Lehmann

Produced by FINCH and Maker Real, the only thing you can expect from The Big Trip is the unexpected. Let the adventure begin!

Episode 1 - One

Wednesday 13 November 8:30 PM

Comedian Dave Thornton stands on the Nullarbor Plain, ready to revive the great Aussie road trip. He’s gathered four celebrity teams for an epic trek from the Nullarbor to Sydney, packed with wild challenges for a chance to gift $300,000 in hybrid and EV cars to lucky fans.

As engines rev, the competition heats up. Olympic legend Lydia Lassila and Survivor champ Pia Miranda form the team to beat, while old friends and university sweethearts, Nikki Osborne and Gyton Grantley, add playful rivalry. Comedy duo Dilruk Jayasinha and Lehmo bring laughs, while designers Mitch and Mark bring flair.

Rolling into Ceduna, the Oyster Capital, the teams face an oyster-eating contest. Mitch starts strong, but Lydia’s competitive streak and Dilruk’s appetite steal the spotlight. Gyton struggles, keeping Nikki entertained. Amid laughter, Dil and Lehmo attempt a cheeky cheat, setting the tone for rivalries.

On day two, the teams hit the Outback, where Mitch’s unexpected fame and Dil’s drink choice spark moments of hilarity. At a wheat farm, they channel “Queen of the Desert,” with Nikki’s dance winning, putting her team on top. Tensions rise, setting the stage for the next round of high-stakes challenges.

Seven and Hyundai are holding a home viewer competition for the show. For a chance to win a brand new Inster EV, watch the premiere next Wednesday and look out for a clue.

The Age Green Guide has published a review of the first episode (possible spoilers inside).

I’m surprised more people aren’t talking about this it’s light entertaining fun.

Seven don’t even want to talk about it, not surprising it’s not very buzzy. It’s one big ad for Hyundai.

Looks like an Amazing Race rip-off.

YEh did 7 bury this show? was it destined for a different timeslot/time of year?

I don’t see why. MKR is weapping up next week and they needed something else. I guess they’ve created this new show to finish the year. It only has four teams of two, so I suppose they are testing it out to see if it’s something they can expand on. If it works, they can have more teams in the next season.

I don’t think 7 commissioned this show with any real intent, the show got off the ground because it’s basically funded by the car sponsorship and it was likely cheap enough to acquire.

I highly doubt they’d be looking at this for anything more than to supplement their current primetime line-up for the rest of the year.

I checked this out on Wednesday night with very low expectations and ended up watching the whole episode. Definitely very sponsored but I thought it was pretty enjoyable. Very light and far from high-brow, but there were a couple of amusing moments.
