That was my initial thought as well.
Exactly. The first Australian season stuck to mostly Asia as well. It becomes too repetitive when they stick to a region. They need a bit more variety in locations.

I’m still looking forward to it but you’re right, they need more variety. I think I still enjoy the European legs the best because of the history. If their aim was to keep things local then it’s a shame they didn’t go to New Zealand.

Our celebrities and their race partners will be met at the starting line by loveable larrikin and host Beau Ryan, who will be sure to throw twists and turns their way as they race across India, Malaysia, Cambodia and Borneo.

Episode synopses are here for week one:
Dane and Bow Simpson Eliminated From The Amazing Race Australia: Celebrity Edition.
The Amazing Race Australia: Celebrity Edition is back. Tonight, eleven celebrities kicked off the race with their nearest and dearest, swapping five-star luxury for the chaotic streets of New Delhi. From Bec Judd to Jana Pittman, Grant Denyer to Ben and Jackie Gillies, these famous faces laced up their joggers to win the ultimate prize - $100,000 for their chosen charity. But it will not be easy.
The heart of India, New Delhi, is a city on steroids. It’s hot, it’s hectic, it’s loud and when you cram 32 million people into it, this chaos is no place for the rich and famous, so obviously, it made for the perfect start for our celebrity teams.
For the first challenge, teams had to ride in Tuk Tuks and race across the city before having to hunt down several local goods in the maze-like markets. In this Detour teams had to choose between two challenges, each with its own pros and cons.
Teams who chose Wedding Dish had to memorise intricate wedding outfits, and with no stylist involved, this Detour required good memory and attention to detail. Option two was Chicken Dish; using a shopping list to purchase five ingredients, this required strong navigation and smart carrying skills around the busiest market in town.
If we didn’t already mention it, it was hot. Like real hot. From the get go, host and actor Darren McMullen was frothing on the chaos, King George was suspicious (to put it lightly) of over eager street sellers, and Bec Judd was craving an iced latte.
George and his sister Pam were quick to form an alliance with Olympian, Jana Pittman, and her 16 year old son Cor, the youngest racer in The Amazing Race Australia history. But nek minute, Jana ditched George and simultaneously gained herself a nemesis.
The Wedding Wish challenge seemed simple on the surface, but when it comes to Indian accessories, less is not more, as Former Silverchair drummer Ben Gillies and his television personality wife Jackie Gillies found out, after failing at several attempts. Upon completing the Detour, Pam suffered heat stroke, but following some mediocre words of encouragement aka ultra tough love from her bro George, she was able to push on.
For two boys who normally get their food via Uber Eats, reality TV stars Harry Jowsey and Teddy Briggs, smashed the Chicken Dish shopping challenge and were quickly in the lead. Racing alongside her sister Hayley, Emma Watkins couldn’t wiggle her way out of this one and carried those tomatoes like they were hot potatoes. “It girls” Bec Judd and her sister Kate Twigley had to press pause on their shopping expedition when Kate succumbed to the 40 degree heat. Comedian Dane Simpson and his dad, Bow, the oldest racer in The Amazing Race Australia history, struggled with the heat and weight of the grocery shop, but drew on the strength of their bond to keep going.
In the next challenge, teams left the chaos of the market to hang out with local children at a pool to try to wrap their tongues around the native language. Alli Simpson took the opportunity to have a good old perv on Harry, under the approving eye of her mum Angie. Harry and Teddy were the first to complete the phrase challenge while stand-up comedians Peter Rowsthorn and his daughter Frankie thought it would be a good opportunity to chat cricket with the locals.
Using the phrase they just learnt, teams had to then direct their Tuk Tuk driver to a holy site where Beau was waiting.
Thanks to their Tuk Tuk tuking too long bro, race leaders Harry and Teddy, slipped to second place, allowing Darren and Tristan to be the first team to jump on the mat.
While Dane was praying for a challenge that involved a few beers and betting on the horses, knowing his dad Bow would excel at that, sadly that was not on the agenda today. They were last to reach the Pit Stop and the first team eliminated from the race.
Tomorrow night, with the Taj Mahal within reach, our celebrities will have to get down and dirty as they struggle to push through exhaustion, heat, chaos and a monsoon event.
Continues Thursday, 5 October At 7.30pm On 10 And 10 Play.
I gave up on The Amazing Race Australia the past couple of seasons but gave last night a go. It wasn’t too bad and overall it’s a pretty good cast IMO. It was interesting how many contestants were getting sick on the leg. It must have been extremely hot.
I just found it a bit odd the angle they are taking that the celebrity’s are giving up their luxury lifestyles for backpacking. Then the winners prize was to stay in a nicer hotel. Are they really roughing it that much? A leg is only a day where they then get a break and I’m sure the accommodation that they stay in won’t be completely terrible.
I am not surprised at the first elimination as the team didn’t really feature in the promo’s. That’s possibly also because they are lesser known names as well and I think the only team that I’ve never really heard of. The other team that I didn’t see much of in promo’s is Jana Pitman and her son so I won’t be surprised if they go early too.
They said it went up to 45 degrees that day.
Good first episode. The challenges were pretty standard for TAR whereas in the past some have been a bit too easy. I thought the production quality seemed higher - camera numbers, image quality etc.
Grant And Chezzi Denyer Eliminated From The Amazing Race Australia: Celebrity Edition.
In India’s city of love, Agra, our celebrities faced extreme heat and a monsoon event as they raced to win $100,000 for their chosen charity. But it was Grant Denyer’s medical emergency on tonight’s emotional episode of The Amazing Race Australia: Celebrity Edition that had Australia shook.
After a bus ride (side note: Grant was 12 the last time he was a backseat bandit. Oh how the other half live) from New Delhi, teams had to deliver office workers their traditional chai tea. With no google maps to help, the celebs had to rely solely on the help of the locals. The tricky thing was, some locals were just a little too eager to help, not worrying whether the help they were giving was correct.
At the Detour teams chose between washing laundry in the Yamuna River or creating fire bricks from an abundant natural source… cow dung.
At poop town, Pam was up sh!t creek with big bro George once again dishing up some tough love to his baby sister. It was a Code Brown for germaphobe sisters Bec Judd and Kate Twigley. After deciding against the laundry option because they didn’t want to touch river water, the bomb dropped when they realised the number two option would see them elbow deep in cow dung, sans gloves. Grant Denyer was hoping his Gold Logie would get him out of the crappy job at hand, but alas, it was poop hands all the way.
At everyone’s favourite celebrity run, river based, laundromat, a monsoon blew in to make the task that much harder. Alli and Angie finished first, but realised they forgot their bags at the tea shop and had no option but to go back to fetch them. Mum of six, Jana Pitman knew a thing or two about getting stains out, passing the challenge in the first go.
At the Intersection, two teams paired up to attempt a complicated Bollywood dance routine. Harry and Teddy were worried there would not be enough WD40 to loosen up their hips but that was the least of their worries after 16 year old Cor threw his toys out of the cot.
Alli and Angie were thrilled when former Wiggle, Emma and Hayley were paired with them, creating the new all girl dance troupe, Masala Spice Girls. Nailing it after their first attempt, the Masala Spice Girls were in the lead.
After many, many, many (did we mention, many?) attempts, Jana used her Mumma powers to calm Cor down, finally managing to complete the challenge, much to Harry and Teddy’s delight.
George, Pam, Bec and Kate knew their eight left feet were not going to help them now, so strategist George convinced the others that taking a time penalty would be a better option.
He may have won Dancing With The Stars twice, but he never did it in 45 degree heat. After successfully completing the dance routine, Grant Denyer succumbed to the heat with medics called in immediately. Despite his very worried wife giving him a talking to, and even after going in and out of consciousness, Grant never lost his humour, telling the medic his name was Larry Emdur.
While Grant continued to receive medical attention, teams raced to the Taj Mahal where Beau was waiting at the Pit Stop. Emma and Hayley were the first team to check in, followed by Alli and Angie.
Peter Rowsthorn and Frankie were the second last team to arrive at the Taj Mahal. With Grant and Chezzi still missing, Beau took the mat to them, knowing they would never give up until their feet were planted on the carpet. In an emotional goodbye, Grant and Chezzi were officially last to arrive. After some tears and laughs, Grant worryingly collapsed on to the mat and was taken to hospital, but rest assured, Australia’s happiest host made a full recovery and no longer thinks he is Larry Emdur.
Next Wednesday, our celebrities take to the waters, but fun with the locals quickly turns to failure.
Continues Wednesday, 11 October At 7.30pm On 10 And 10 Play.
“He no longer thinks he is Larry Emdur.”
Amongst the drama, that cracked me up.
Even though Grant’s collapse from heatstroke had been shown in promos many times, it was still hard to watch on the night. Glad that he made a full recovery after he returned home.
The episode didn’t say if Grant and Chezzi were eliminated in Agra, but the heading of the post-match interview with News Corp’s Jonathan Moran says the couple had to withdraw from competition.
Also notice that the time penalty for not completing a task was just one hour, and the teams served the penalty not at the pit stop, but at the location of the task.
One hour may not be much of a deterrent. I recall penalties from the US version being three hours, or maybe even more. Regarding when they serve the penalty, from memory they normally do it at the location. I think the only time they serve a penalty at the pitstop is if they’ve made an error during the race, such as taking a cab when they were supposed to walk, and Phil/Beau tells them of their error when they attempt to check in and makes them wait next to the matt while they serve a 30 minute penalty.
