That last idea sounds like The Project so Ten has already tried all of your ideas. Someone should do a article on all of the shows Ten has tried at 6pm over the years. I used to have the list somewhere
If Ten had MAFS this would be the time you’d move it to 6pm and try a new reality tentpole at 7:30pm. Try and force people away from their 6pm nightly news habit.
Ten has the Melbourne Cup now so get the VRC to move the race to 6pm. Surely people will watch the cup over news?
A couple of years ago, Seven asked Moonee Valley Racing Club to move the Cox Plate race to 5.45pm to provide a good lead-in to the 6pm Melbourne bulletin. It failed so the race was moved back to 5pm. Having the Melbourne Cup race at 6pm won’t work.
Cox Plate is important in racing circles but not mainstream like the Melbourne Cup.
I read the 2017 Melbourne Cup ratings were the lowest ever with little improvement last year so something needs to happen.
I think the official ratings mean nothing with the Melbourne Cup. Millions more people watch it than are measured by OzTAM and Regional TAM.

I agree. Realistically the Melbourne Cup would have to be the most watched event on Australian TV all year, bar none. But obviously the OzTam ratings system can’t account for the many thousands (potentially millions) of people around the country watching the race away from their TVs at home.

You’ll never change people from watching news at 6pm to a reality format - won’t work!
Exactly, I don’t think reality is the answer here and I think even If it did work it just cannibalises the audience of that reality program when it would likely perform far better at 730.
Reality is also not going to be a constant.
I think an immediate improvement would be to extend 10 News First into the 6pm slot its increasing its audience at 5pm and its a brand that can grow.
How low have the ratings for Pointless at 6pm gotten exactly?
If the audience just aren’t interested could they go back to stripping a US comedy at 6pm? A family centred sitcom like Fresh off the Boat could work
Didn’t it get shifted to odd time slots on Eleven because it was struggling?
Seinfeld, Two and a Half Men, and even The Big Bang Theory all struggled initially on Australian TV. I’m not saying it will work, but it’s possible.
At what point do 10 concede defeat on Pointless (or even reformat it to a weekly 1 hour show), and try something different at 6pm?
We already had a thread for this (mods, please merge?).
If that’s Ten’s solution to the 6pm timeslot, they may as well give up their broadcast licences now.

I just assumed that it would be Celebrity Name Game. It was only a quick 30min show in the US so seems perfect for this timeslot.
I believe they only made 12 episodes of CNG.
