Tennis

I’ve switched to GEM and Kubler. Hopefully he can finish this match with a win. So close also.

Even John McEnroe disagrees. I read somewhere that he said it was for the money.

We could potentially have two matches finishing past midnight: the upcoming match featuring women’s defending champion Aryna Sabalenka, and, potentially, the Tiafoe-Coric match if that one goes past a third set.

As we speak, Kubler has held for 5-all in the final set.

On a general note, I like that Grand Slam tennis is cracking down on very lengthy matches by having the final set decided in a tiebreak (though a first to 10 rather than the standard first to seven) so we don’t ever have a sequel to that 70-68 marathon at Wimbledon in 2010.

How good is tennis though? Both games tonight have been outstanding. And we still have Sabalenka to play tonight.

Kubes, oh man :sob: :sob:

Let’s see if it’s helped Monday and Tuesday though

That’s what I love about Grand Slam tennis, the long matches and late-night finishes. Though I can understand why the Majors want to crack down on lengthy matches/sessions.

Prior to 2019, the only Major that ran a tiebreak in the final set was the US Open; they used the standard first-to-seven format. That tournament only enhances/reinforces New York’s status as “the city that never sleeps”.

I’m going tomorrow night to see Demon and Naomi Osaka. Let’s hope I’m not still sitting there Tuesday morning :upside_down_face::tennis:

I’m not understanding why there is so much focus on this one match going late. There will always be matches that go longer than expected. That doesn’t change the fact that the extra day alleviates the entire opening schedule across the board, which is usually very cluttered.

I’m sure most would have assumed that the Djokovic match would be over pretty quickly but it’s Tennis and it ended up being a long one. Sure they could have opened with the female match but the primetime slot on Day 1 was always going to go to the Men’s #1.

Also the logic of the extra day on a weekend speaks for itself. In addition to an overall less cluttered schedule, Day 1 was attended by 10,000 more than last year. I think it’s great that it gives more people the opportunity to attend, as otherwise it’s really only the first weekend of the Australian Open that has enough matches on the outer courts to make a day pass worthwhile (and that first Saturday is usually chaotically busy). So the attendee’s benefit for having more options to attend on a weekend when there are plenty of matches and TA are winners too ($$ wise).

One thing we did see, was last night’s feature (arena) night session (first) matches commence relatively on time, in fact Joker’s rather early by about 7:15, something that often did not happen. That day time clutter and over-lap, especially the arenas, was definitely reduced.

Let’s see what happens today and tomorrow with that, as well as late night, I have a feeling there could be some positive outcomes.

But there’s always going to be pros/cons and traditionalists unhappy or those taking a cynical view.

That’s why I get annoyed at Djoker,He does bounce the ball too much unnecessarily before he serves,I’m surprised he doesn’t get a lot of time violations

I might be in for an early night after all. Medical time out for Demon’s match here at Rod Laver.

He does but the key with Joker is that he does the same thing all the time. The point is if everything is working you never change anything.

What a shame. Oh wells, least I won’t be sat here at 2am!

Looking forward to seeing Osaka.

It was Milos Raonic who had to retire hurt. He had suffered a few injuries in recent years.

A late-nighter on Show Court 3 tonight with FAA and Thiem in a near 5-hour epic

The “wokest tournament ever”

Later:

"How many years which have we been playing tennis, and then all of a sudden they spring on us that (the fans) can come in between (games) not even a sit-down. So it just disrupts everyone’s rhythm.

"I mean, if someone is walking at the back and you are throwing the ball toss up, it’s impossible to see it because you have a moving person behind it.

How long til Tiley goes?

How can a tennis tournament be woke? I’m not sure what that’s all about. Just because a rule changed for spectators to come and go. I get it’s very distracting but how is it woke?

A tennis tournament probably could be “woke” by the current definition but I think Jordan Thompson used it in a nonsensical way.
