Totally agree this is the best short term solution.

5.00 10 News Adelaide (heavily local city name branded news format)
6.00 10 News Adelaide (heavily local city name local news format)
6.30 10 News+ (NBC News now V current news+ format)
7.00 Deal or no Deal

The big difference to 2 years ago is 6pm is a heavily local city branded 30 minute self contained bulletin. Not a 90 minute format starting at 5

“10 News Adelaide at 6. Give us 30 minutes. We’ll give you ALL the news you need”

(The appeal is 30 minutes - not a drawn out hour)

I realise it would be very risky to mess with 5pm, since it’s the only thing really working for them in the early evenings right now. But I’ve long thought they need to get better value out of the state newsrooms rather than just pumping out one bulletin a day.

I’d be aiming for 3 x 30 minute bulletins a day: 5pm, 6pm and around 9pm. All live and local and could even still work on a slightly pre-recorded model for the late news as they do now (especially for things like sport/weather), with the option to go fully live for breaking news etc.

That leaves the 5.30pm and 6.30pm half-hours. DOND can fill one, and the other could be a reworked 10 News+, more like an extension of the local bulletin with longer-form investigations or lighter stories, intro’d locally. It could potentially evolve into its own standalone program later on.

This would mean primetime starts at 7pm, which they’ve done before and could do again, plus it’s (usually) where their biggest audience of the night is and likely would be the most competitive against the others at that time.

The other option is building a proper alternative at 7pm (or arguably between 6-7pm) something family-friendly, whether panel, chat or entertainment that isn’t news. But that takes time, money and the right format to get it right.

It was obvious 10 wanted The Project to wrap up before the end of the 2024-25 financial year. As such, I’m still baffled as to why everything about 10 News+ from the hiring of talent to launching the program and everything in between was so rushed.

To be blunt, the network set the program up to fail by not giving everyone involved the necessary time to prepare and rehearse which would have allowed them to refine the show’s format, pacing, structure and other elements. A lot of the issues the show has should (and probably would) have been identified pre-launch had the team been allowed to figure those things out without having to worry about putting a program to air.

One of the central issues 10 News+ has is that it’s a program with an identity crisis, which is alarming considering it’s only been airing for a week and a half. It doesn’t know whether it wants to be a:

  1. daily version of 60 Minutes/Spotlight (something which just isn’t sustainable even short term);
  2. commercial version of 7:30 in that it centers around interviews and longer than usual feature stories;
  3. program which is a hybrid of the US evening news bulletins (in wrapping up the day’s events) and BBC or ITV News at Ten (when it comes to the amount of time spent on the key stories); or
  4. mere national news program.

Most nights it seems like it’s at least two of the above things. The result is 10 News+ has no clear sense of what it wants it’s identity to be and if a program doesn’t have that, it’s hard to give or convince viewers why they should watch it.

2 years ago was similar to this format - the 6pm bulletin was like a separate stand alone one. It followed a one hour format that included all news, sport and weather. Then at 6pm it started over again with headlines sport and weather but omitting the international filler etc. This still happens on Saturdays in the 90 minutes news block.

I’d be wary of restarting at 6pm, you’re inviting switchover. I’d start a few minutes earlier with lead stories so people don’t realise it’s turned 6.

Obviously why they’ve gone from starting at 5:59pm, to now 6:01pm - letting the local bulletins play out a bit longer with weather and closing before News+ starts.

That is what they did 2 years ago - only thing is it wasn’t marketed.

As you say, it wasn’t promoted at all, they largely just repeated the 5pm hour. They could’ve pressed play on what they’d aired earlier and I doubt anyone would have noticed - there was no incentive to watch.

5pm should’ve been teased as what was coming up in the flagship bulletin at 6pm, probably didn’t help that they were all still mostly centralized at that time so doing anything more than they were would’ve been near on impossible.

It was clearly just a cheap way to fill 6pm at the time, and something they should’ve stuck with / invested in as funding returned to news, it could’ve built up over time like 5pm has.

Now they’ve had at least 3 different options in the 6pm slot the last few years and arguably it gets worse for them each time when the audience doesn’t return.

With the local ratings increasing for 5pm it makes sense to return to local news there. See how it goes, test a reformatted show at 6.30 with Georgie. Long term if they still doesn’t catch fire but the local service is doing well extend that through till 7pm.

Makes it even harder to understand how they made the decision to axe The Project and replace it with this!

At least DOND is up, I guess.

Maybe they should have tried moving The Project to 6pm, or making it 30 mins at 6:30pm after an extended 10 News (where they could then incorporate some longer investigative stories by Denham).

Perhaps if a 60 minute program at a 30 minute program was a thing, then it could be a national edition at 5pm followed by 10 News metro city at 5:30 til 6:30.

If i did the above i would consider extending the afternoon news to 1 hour (3pm start time) and adding a 1 hour bulletin at 11am. Game shows from 7am til 9am weekdays and reality encores at 9am.

Just saw a promo for 10News+ tonight - something about a bakery in a ghost town.
Hard to see how they expect to grow their audience with such random and unengaging stories.

Just ignore the show. I do and I feel fine. :stuck_out_tongue:

The people who commented the most about The Project were those that never watched it, so that tradition may continue with 10 News+

If we all did that majority of the threads would be empty

Well that would be better than some of the “expert advice” I’ve seen here from people who don’t even watch the shows they’re banging on about.

Sussan Ley as the second story = turn off.

The presenters look like they are extremely anxious, the chemistry isn’t there. It’s like they’re forcing conversation between themselves.
