And fuck in the only thing working in its local news? Some of the posts here border on insanity.
Would be absolutely dumb to mess with the 5pm local news but from 6-7.30pm could work, maybe with local news inserts at 6.30/7 for a few minutes.
An hour is plenty. 5pm is working fine and growing audience share. 6pm is an immediate disaster that needs a complete rework.
Was reading this Mediaweek interview which is pretty telling in retrospect. The EP is an ex TV journo which probably explains that the whole Facts Matter Serious Journalism vibe.
Very telling that there is no convincing answer offered in response to two obvious questions about it being too newsy and repeating Negus:
Mediaweek: Is there a danger that this show is going to cater exclusively for news junkies with it in direct competition against the other commercial networks flagship news shows?
Sutton: 10 News+ will offer an alternative at 6pm. Elsewhere, youâll still find the car crashes, house fires and state politics that 10 has already covered in our flagship state-based bulletins at 5pm.
Instead, weâll go in depth on issues that affect Aussies, and get into the âwhyâ, not just the who, what and when. And when we break a big story, weâll have the time to explain it and dig into the detail.
We absolutely hope people who are ânews curiousâ will give us a try.
Mediaweek: Network 10 famously tried George Negus Tonight, followed by a 6:30pm news program in that same slot. What makes this effort different⊠was it simply a case of 10 being a bit too far ahead of the times with that strategy?
Sutton: Can you believe that was 14 years ago? A lot has changed in that time, particularly the ambiguity between ânewsâ and âviewsâ. Itâs hard to escape opinion now. Itâs screaming at you via social media, and weâre all so reliant on our phones, itâs coming at you 24/7.
With that in mind, I feel thereâs never been a better time to launch a show that focuses on facts.
Our news service at Network 10 has always been straight down the line. We donât take sides. We donât tell you what to think. But I hope our viewers are open to considering different perspectives. We certainly will be, and asking the awkward questions that go with that.
Itâs always the risk when you put a journo in a producers role, they forget the audience has to actually watch it.
He might see it as an alternative but the viewers clearly donât. And why would they? When they see 7 News, 9 News and 10 News+ on the EPG, theyâll think ânews, news and more bloody newsâ. And most of those who did decide to check out 10 News+ this week probably tuned in expecting the news of the day⊠only to be greeted with a 20 minute long report on an unwitting drug smuggler.
No wonder so few are watching.
Yeah I need to âsmarter my nights".
Itâs no good launching a product that meet the consumers needs if the consumer doesnât think that is what they want - even if it might be what they really need. And even if they want it they donât want an hour of it - it needs to be more consumable - and their arguement would be the 5pm bulletins pretty much do that anyway. From what Iâve seen the focus seems to be on reporting rather than opinion.
We sadly also live in a world where many people donât search out the facts - they just look for the âfactsâ that match their opinion and for people with strong opinions who agree with their own opinion, even if theyâve no expertise in the field and every expert points out the actual facts show them to be wrong.
I think we will know more with numbers this week.
But I expect changes being implemented immediately.
What are they currently advertising for this week?
Hereâs a few promos which give you the idea.
At least 2 networks have this format about 5pm/m-8pm in 3 hour blocks
Denham introduced her as Carrie-Anne Greenbank didnât he?
Australians go to bed earlier than other countries. It would be equivalent to having a 4- 6pm afternoon chat show.
I see a whole bunch of Facebook, YouTube advertising has now popped up.
Australia has tried the 5pm show (Live At Five), the 6pm show ( Level 23), a 4:30pm show (This Afternoon) and Nine even tried Dr Phil there back in the 200ps before 10 got the rights.
I think 10 should try a 2pm til 3:30pm shiw with this show for half hour, possibly with a revised fornat (more ACA-ish than 4 Corners)
10 News+ struggles to reach highs of The Project in first week on-air
A spokesperson said the network was âtaking a long-term, multi-platform view of audience development.â
âBuilding a loyal news audience takes time, and we are prepared for gradual growth as audiences discover and connect with our unique approach to news delivery across many platforms,â the statement said.
â10 is fully committed to 10 News+. This is a marathon, not a sprint. We are investing in building a sustainable, quality multi-platform news service that will grow and evolve with our audienceâs needs over time.â
Another example of the average journalist not understanding the VOZ ratings:
On Tuesday evening, 10 News+ recorded an average of 244,000 viewers, before attracting 205,000 on Wednesday and 159,000 on Thursday. Friday numbers dipped again with an average audience of 152,000.
Numbers were far more promising when factoring in on-demand views, including on 10 Play, with a total reach of 769,000 on Monday, 743,000 on Tuesday, 586,000 on Wednesday, 468,000 on Thursday and 655,000 on Friday.
The average figures already included 10Play while the reach figure is the number watching one minute (broadcast TV) and/or 15 seconds (BVOD) of the program
Theyâve ran here in Sydney atleast tonightâs âBob Katterâ promo just about every ad break. Also the end card has Sandra on it, surprised they didnât have one of Chris.
Thereâs a 15 and 30 second version - all promo is for 6pm Sunday - a lot of promotion compared to what The Project used to get.
Ironically news of The Project being axed was the most promotion it had in a while!
I know some people who said they used to flick over to it occasionally to see who was on but then they just kinda forgot about it, and they started sampling it again in its final week after hearing about it ending!
Preview before weather
6pm - slightly late start.
More headlines then an ad break at 6:11; way too early, great opportunity for viewers to change to local bulletins on 7 or 9.
The flow of tonightâs show seems better. Really enjoyed the chats about Peter Russell Clarke
Tenâs News+ audience starts low and sheds three quarters of its viewers over first week
According to one highly placed source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the big problem is Ten id doing exactly the same as everyone else.
âItâs honestly baffling. Ten are bringing a knife to a gunfight,â the source said.
âI donât blame the people on the show, or even the people making the show.
âIt is the fault of whoever in management thought it was a good idea to insert basically the same news and current affair offering in the most hotly contested slot in Australia television which is being slugged out in a fight to the death by the two biggest heavyweights (in Seven and Nine).â
And the results speak for themselves. Ten has been obliterated in the timeslot with up to a million more people watching its commercial rivals.
âI donât understand the calculation that there are all these people out there who are so desperate for a news program that they want another hour of news after watching an hour of news on Channel 10, but donât want to watch an hour of news on Seven or Nine,â the source said.
