Peter Ford said on 3AW breakfast today that long-running religious show Mass for You at Home has been axed. The show posted a message on Facebook yesterday:
The final Mass for Mass For You At Home will be broadcast on Channel 10 on January 3, 2021. We, the people who have worked on the program for many, many years, are deeply saddened that this day has come. A history of the program is currently being written by the priests, readers, signers, technicians and producers of the program and will be available for viewers to keep as a memento in late January. More details will be available soon. We will miss you, the viewers, who have become a part of our lives and trust that you will find a way to keep in touch with your faith and the Church in the future. Take care and God bless. (We will keep this page and our website running for a while after the final Mass goes to air.)
According to Wikipedia, it debuted in August 1971.
To add, it wasnât axed by Ten, but the Catholic Church.
What time is this broadcast?
6am Sundays. Recent episodes are also available on 10 Play.
Fair enough to axe it. It lost its way and the storylines were becoming far fetched.
But now theyâll end it on a cliffhanger and we will never know if the rumoured Second Coming will ever happen.
Mass For You at Home is also the longest running program on Australian commercial TV and the 4th longest running overall - I guess with Four Corners, Play School and Behind The News on the ABC being #1, #2 and #3 respectively.
Ford was mistaken - the show hasnât been axed:
How very odd?
Does Peter just make things up? Surely he heard it from somewhere?
Especially since the show posted a farewell message on their Facebook page, perhaps they quickly backtracked on their decision to axe the show.
Interesting given that MFYAH itself posted the news and final airdate on its Facebook page.
I wonder if the Archdiocese has had a sudden change of mindâŚ
It was on the MFYAH Facebook page. Looking back at past posts it appears that financial support for the program had been under review by the Archdiocese of Melbourne. Itâs unclear how much support this entailed given that Ten apparently donates studio time, production staff and music licencing fees.
I didnât even know this show existedâŚ
Prior to today, I think a lot of people wouldnât have been aware that Mass For You at Home is still running.
Not sure whether to say that itâs good how the program has been given a reprieve because Iâm not really a fan of religious programming (that said, I certainly have far less problems with something like MFYAH existing than those rather scummy and mainly US-based âseed faithâ programs/channels) but would probably think itâs reasonable to presume that the Archdiocese of Melbourne likely had a change of mind after possible backlash from social media.
When WIN dropped the show from its schedule a few years back, my website got a lot of comments from people outraged about it being gone. Fortunately for them, WIN soon reinstated it.
The show certainly does seem to have a loyal, though small, following. It probably got more viewers this year due to the pandemic. It certainly fills a community need and I think all credit to Ten for supporting it for this many years at some cost to them in terms of production facilities, airtime, etc.
Agreed. Better they put on a modest local production than a American televangelist.
