Ten (Mildura Digital Television)

Agreed, the hodgepodge makes no sense any longer, especially with streaming.

Why can’t they roll all
These tiny city licences into the statewide license like the rest of the state?

Ideally, that’s what they should do, statewide licences.

Seems obvious - other than paperwork adjusting things etc why can’t it make sense

Never made sense to have small one of city’s with individual license w

I mean Canberra and Newcastle don’t but mildura does?

No, because they are audio people, not tv people. Even if they were a fully Seven affiliate, they would still run a dirty feed across their entire network.

It did when they were a truly one or two broadcaster markets. It is the digital supplementary stations and then the various multi-channels that stuffed the economics up of these places.

It’s a hangover from aggregation in the 80s

If FTA wants to survive they all need to work together and stop fighting.

Wouldn’t it be amazing if we could have (something) like the following:

Seven HD
Drama HD
Laugh HD
Mate HD

Nine HD
Crime HD
Deja View HD
Sport 1 HD

Ten HD
Nick HD
Family HD
Sport 2 HD

etc, with networks sharing content for each channel and an encompassing body looking after all the day-to-day running etc.

I know it will never ever happen… but a bloke can dream.

Statement from Ten:

“We’re bitterly disappointed that regional TV operators are being put in a position that they need to take this action,” a Network 10 spokesperson said.

“It’s the people of Mildura and the surrounding region that will be hurt by this decision and it’s unacceptable that tens of thousands of Australians will see some of their favourite free-to-air broadcast channels go to black.

“The Federal Government must act urgently to ensure the Network 10 affiliated channels can continue to be available via broadcast transmission.

“Regional Australians, including residents around Mildura, love our iconic and award-winning Australian shows such as MasterChef Australia, Have You Been Paying Attention?, Gogglebox and The Cheap Seats to name just a few.

“They love our fearless approach to news and current affairs with 10 News First and The Project and they love to cheer on the Matildas and Socceroos when they take on the world.

“These great moments and shows cannot be allowed to disappear from their local broadcast channels.

“We urge the Prime Minister to urgently intervene and save these regional TV broadcasts.

“This also shows how vitally important prominence of our free streaming services has become so that every Australian can easily find local content and broadcasters on their connected TVs and devices which is what the residents of Mildura will need to do to continue watching 10’s shows.”

TV Tonight believes WIN was the one who pulled the plug

The major hurdle will be the maintenance cost of the transmitter. The council will need government subsidy and local business support.

That put Prime in an awkward position given Seven’s ownership. If Prime is still independently owned it might be a different story.

It would be very wrong for the taxpayer to bail them out with funds that can be used elsewhere, more so with a delivery mechanism that is in decline.

As Mildura was the test market for analogue switch off, make it also the test market for FTA transmission switch off and go on-line only?

But in effect the people of Mildura will be paying to see ten via streaming on ten play through app or internet. That’s included in the data allowance in the internet plan that people have to pay for. The people there better hope there is 5 g or very fast nbn which I doubt it has. Or maybe they will have to get starlink or a satellite dish to get fast internet.

Someone should plug in the 10 play app into the transmitter and run that. There are ways to make things happen.

I heard a horror story once where VEW8 Kalgoorlie was relayed to the Wheatbelt in the 80’s by someone pointing a camera at a TV and sending it down the line.

The TV equivalent of rebroadcasting an actual AM signal on FM.

Or take the Bendigo feed off air from Swan Hill. But yes ongoing transmitter costs are the main hurdle with this.

Could the tv tower at Mildura act as a translator for the SCA 10 Bendigo or Ballarat feed?

No, the govt should not be involved in subsidising commercial TV stations / networks to small population centres.

The federal government can ask the ACMA to change the TV licensing laws to include Mildura in Western Victoria TV1 licence area. Mildura is part of Victoria anyway.

that seems super easy agree

7 and WIN won’t like that as it basically gives SCA a free license into Mildura.

I think they want to condense all the available ad revenue in that market into their 2 channels, which would explain their reasons for wanting to switch off the JV.
