Ten (Mildura Digital Television)

MDT

Can someone point me In the right direction on how to convert the PVR files this came off my friend’s PVR who recorded the shutdown but I can’t seem to convert It.

What PVR does your friend have?

Potentially try rename the data.000 to data.ts and see if VLC will play it.

Didn’t work.

I’ve been researching this and it looks like these files are recorded by TCL Smart TVs and their built-in PVR function, which record to USB hard drives. It does appear that the data.000 file contains the MPEG transport stream (TS) however it is probably encrypted. I found a thread on another forum where they discuss this, though it appears that they didn’t get as far as extracting the video data.

Coincidentally, I also have a TCL Smart TV with a drive attached for the PVR. Perhaps I can do some recording tests of my own and report back. In any case, I hope you can extract the video.

Thank you so much for that.

So, I’ve accessed some test recordings from my TV and can confirm that I got the same files, however after poking around them a bit I have not yet been able to decrypt or otherwise extract any video from the files. I shall keep working on this.

I know times have changed a lot since the days when WIN was a joint Nine/Ten affiliate in Mildura, and indeed elsewhere. In theory could WIN arrange with Ten to carry their main channel instead of one of Nine’s multichannels? Or replace a few programs such as encores or repeats (on any channel they carry) with the most popular Ten content - sports matches or tournaments exclusive to Ten (if tnere are any) and/or the likes of Masterchef, Neighbours, Law and Order? I know this is unlikely in practice but legally how would this affect the current affiliation deal with Nine? I assume WIN are locked into this and with part of the deal being Nine branding (unlike in the past) Nine are unlikely to want competitors programs on a Nine-branded station.

If Nine won’t let them carry 10 programs on Nine branded channels, maybe WIN could repurpose the GOLD channel to show a limited amount of 10 programming.

So one of the files (the largest one) does look like an MPEG TS file however any program I try to throw it into doesn’t seem to be able to read it, even when I force the extension to be .ts. So I think that confirms my suspicion that it is encrypted, however, I have not yet found anything that could be a decryption key. Later tonight I might plug the drive back into my TV and see if there are any export options. Perhaps the recording feature was not designed to be portable.

Is this even worth your time? Do you literally just have a recording of MDT that just goes black all of a sudden? Was there even a sign off or final screen worth seeing.

You do have a point there.

We do have @Casper’s phone recording of the shutdown and it looks like they just flipped the switch at midnight. I was hoping to see if the apparent reception issues at the end were actually transmission issues related to the switch-off, but it looks like we won’t know.

As an aside to this project, I was happy to learn how to get my own recordings and learn how to archive them myself, but I think I won’t be able to make any more progress. Seems like the PVR recordings are locked to the TV for playback.

If WIN were to air Ten content (and Nine’s affiliation deal doesn’t prevent it), WIN would be best placing a block of Ten programming weekdays either from 2pm til 5:30pm or 3pm til 6:30pm with the bloc consisting of Tens 1pm til 3pm programming for first 2 hours, then Tens 4pm til 5pm shows and finishing the bloc with Deal Or No Deal.

I’m not sure if WIN can or even whether this scenario would have been addressed in any way. This may or may not be a possibility given the lack of regional variations compared to past agreements between regionals and metros

Logically carrying 10 on a multichannel would make more sense.

WIN is required to simulcast Nine’s schedule under the contract, with opt outs only under express agreement, the only regular example is WIN News, which now airs at the early time of 5:30 because Nine would rather simulcast their metro bulletin at 6pm and plus WIN and Nine don’t have to bother putting effort into filling the 6:30-7:00 timeslot.

Is this a fact or simply a presumption though? Noting that WIN would still have to pay for the supply of programs even if they didn’t air them as per under earlier agreements

Fact, otherwise I wouldn’t have written it.

Strange to see so much stock footage and stuff from the WIN-produced ad used in this rather than file.

And how do you know this? I’m really curious because contracts generally speaking are subject to confidentiality and ultimately falls under legislation such as the Privacy Act 1988.

I actually suspect that if what you say is true, Nine would likely agree with conditions such as no advertising of the non-Nine network programming whatsoever to ensure no accidental advertising rival programs in other areas such as Southern NSW or even throughout QLD due to feeds coming from same location

You’re looking way more into this than is the case. It means exactly as I said, WIN cannot breakaway from the Nine schedule without prior permission. This reduces costs for both WIN and Nine.
