What Is The Christmas Movie That Is Playing When The PRG Says Castaway? Also What Is The Actual Title Of The TV Show Which Is Covered Up With Question Marks?

Both from TNT Channel 9 Northern Tasmania

It was Cast Away. For some reason WIN spelt it Castaway.

We apologise for this interruption. Unfortunately a technical problem prevents us continuing our scheduled program for the moment

A lot of the continuity problems up until digital came in 2000 were caused by faults with the Ampex ACR and RCA TCR machines that were used to playout commercials: Both were dogs of things that used 2inch video cassettes and had complex tape lacing/unlacing mechanisms. They had 2 decks in the them so when one was reloading and lacing while the other side played a loaded cassette to air. They were so unreliable some of the capital city stations compiled their high value commercial breaks in advance onto 1inch tape prior to them going to air during news and sport.

Back in the days of yore they even put 16mm film to air direct off a Telecine machine - often prints like The Beverley Hillbillies and Get Smart were damaged with torn sprocket holes and they broke on air necessitating a quick splice during the commercial break. Most feature length movies were dubbed from 16mm films to 1inch prior to going to air though.

Lots of stuff ups happened during live news bulletins too:the edited news stories were dubbed from film/Umatic/Betacam to 1inch and put to air by a tape operator - the news producers often changed the rundowns at the last minute and that left the studio director and the tape operator on different pages, so the wrong story was either intro’ed by the newsreader or put to air by the tape ops. Some nights with lots happening like live crosses it ended up a complete circus.
