I need a little assistance. I have recently changed internet providers for my mum. She has a home office in the granny flat out the back. There is an internet connection out there with its own modem box. It was connected to the same line before. But now that I have changed internet providers I want to know how I go about setting up my old modem to get the new internet connection. Hope that makes sense. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you want to share the same internet connection that is in the main house (assuming the main house has its own separate connection), then you will need to run an ethernet cable to the granny flat.
The ethernet cable would run from a LAN port on your router in the main house.

Optionally, if the granny flat has its own separate connection altogether (registered as a separate address by NBN), you would need to pay for a connection for the house and granny flat separately.

What do you mean by this? Same phone line (such as ADSL connection)?
What NBN connection does the block have? FTTN, HFC etc?

there is also the chance of a wifi extender as well

Ok so there is already a portal in the granny flat. It used to be connected to the same internet as the one in the house but since we changed over internet providers it changed. Does that make sense?

It won’t extend far enough to the granny flat. And I already have all the stuff out in the room it is just about trying to connect that modem. I’m not really tech savvy so I don’t really know how to explain it all.

Did the internet provider give you guys a new router? Did it suddenly stop working after changing router (if you did change router)?

If it helps, in the granny flat, which port does it have on the wall?
Could you possibly take a picture of the socket on the wall? (I’m trying my best to work out the current situation)

So a few years ago we paid money to have a line put in the granny flat so it was connected the house internet. When I changed over I was provided with a new router for the house and new login and password.

Okay I get what you mean
So new line = ethernet to the house. Good.

Have you connected that socket (as you pictured) to a port on the new router in the house?
Take a picture of the back of the router too.

So I have taken the old router out of the granny flat to work out what was wrong. I haven’t taken the new one out to the granny flat yet. This is the router and NBN box inside

so you have got fttp then i would take it

Does that yellow cable run to a port which links to the granny flat?

From experience, if the connection in the granny flat was not working, it may be that the new router and the granny flat router had an “IP Address conflict” when both were running, which can result in no internet on either of the routers.
(This is quite technical and not super easy to fix without the knowledge.)

That is the only thing which comes to mind.

If you disconnect your new router and reconnected the old router inside the house, does the internet work in both the house and granny flat?

I will have to check that and let you know. I just thought it would be as simple as connect and go or connect it to that internet. Thanks for your help

The old router did have a different password and was called a different name like infinity extension or something.

Typically it is as simple as connect and go, but only when you have one router on the entire network.
If you have more than 1 router connected (such as one in the house and one in the granny flat), then it can be a bit more complex and a bit of networking knowledge is required.

If you don’t require WiFi in the granny flat, you can also just connect a laptop/PC directly to this port:

By doing that, it should fix any problems you are having.

Alternatively, you should still be able to use your old router in the house (and not use the new one at all).

The routers can be used no matter which service provider you are with (since the NBN box you pictured is the main modem which does all the hard work).

(Hope I haven’t confused you too much!)

Are they going to do their other song “Figured You Out”?

It starts:

I like your pants around your feet
And I like the dirt that’s on your knees
And I like the way you still say “Please”
While you’re looking up at me… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

My McAfee subscription price is $189.95 for one year if I let it auto-renew, or $109.95 for one year if I manually renew.
