Used to be a Mac/iPhone user for 10 years then I switched back to a Windows PC. Microsoft have improved the Windows user experience so much now.
My desktop rig is a few years old now but here’s the spec:
Intel Core i5-2310 @ 2.9GHz (Sandy Bridge)
ASUS P8Z68-M PRO Motherboard
8GB DDR3-1600 SDRAM
AMD Radeon R7 340/240 with 2GB memory (Replacement for a high-end nVidia that broke)
Intel 120GB SATA 3.0 SSD
WDC WD6400 640GB SATA 3.0 HDD
Hope to upgrade to a Ryzen system one day.
My laptop is a Chromebook running on an Intel Celeron N4000, 4GB RAM and 32GB eMMC storage.
iMac Pro if blowing 5 figures on a well-specced variant could be considered pocket change for me
I built a new PC at the end of last year, last one was approaching 7 years old and was starting to really chug with certain games, and I’d never upgraded it to Win10 anyway. Ryzen 3700X / 32GB RAM / RX5700XT / 2TB NVMe SSD.
I am a bit half and half with the statement. I do agree and don’t agree. Each has it’s usefulness and depending on who you are.
It’s not really aimed for people who can afford it to be honest. For people who prefer stability, and want a locked down easy to use system where they don’t have to fiddle with things to get things working (case in point - Windows)
I do agree the price are high, but people still buy it blindly. (In the market for a new Mac, My Mac mini is from 2012, so it’s getting on a fair bit. Still runs photoshop really well with the 8 gigs that I upgraded the ram four, virtual machines etc etc).
Windows is flexible to the point where it has become saturated with too many features to change. And thats the problem with Windows today from my personal experience. I always thought Macs were aimed towards old people not sure where I got that idea from. (Probably from Bill Gates, who might I add is the one copies and steals everything and couldn’t think of anything for himself)
From an IT Management perspective Windows is much better in terms of networking capabilities, security with Group Policies and locking down machines. Have seen it run along Side Open Directory (Apple’s server OS) when I was working in IT at a high school (thank god I got out of IT while I was still young, I’m in mid 30s these days) , it was a pain in the ass to set up but once it did, it played nice with Active directory.
Mac’s definitely seem to be better for the professional who need professional apps like the Adobe collection.
Haha yeah that’s Windows for you. Windows 7 though was the perfect operating system, there was no need to fuck it up with Window 8/8.1 or even 10.
I am waiting for tax to buy a new Macbook Pro, the new 13inch $3k model that was released this month. I’ve held off for ages waiting for a new one without the shit keyboard they had previously. I still have my 2011, and it works fine it’s just not getting new releases of updates and hasn’t for ages. Otherwise I’ve only replaced the battery once and put a SSD drive in since I got it, and it runs fine.
I only do light photoshop, audio editing and browsing/work. So I don’t need a Windows machine, and I haven’t used Windows since XP and I’ve basically forgotten how to use them now when I’ve had to.
i9-7900X 3.31Ghz
128 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080
Multiple hard drives for storage.
I always get a local comp shop to build a computer when a new one is required; and generally try to future proof with the specs especially processor, though the graphics card doesn’t have to be best gaming one. I think I’m OK for the moment.
I have quite a few programs that only run on PCs and emulation on Mac is not recommended.
