As a newbie to the industry, he would be taking a close look at 3AW and its amazing results and wonder why its not working in Brisbane with a similar format. A business mind would find some lessons to roll out but its not a simple fix.
But it isn’t as simple as saying “3AW’s format should work on 4BC.” Tapt could transplant 3AW’s format into an underperforming market and still fail to improve its share because, at the end of the day, it would just be Brisbane or Perth trying to imitate a Melbourne model. That’s basically what MTR thought when they assumed 2GB’s format would stand up against 3AW in Melbourne. Sure, the programming and voices were different, but it was still essentially 2GB with some added locality.
I think the better approach is to look at what 3AW actually does well, work out why it works, and then take those lessons and mould them around 4BC’s existing style, audience and strengths. From there, build the program formats around what you’ve actually found rather than deciding on a format first and then trying to find presenters to fit it.
Then do the same thing with 6PR if needed. Take the things that work, understand why they work, and then adapt them to suit the market rather than just transplanting another market’s format wholesale.
The goal shouldn’t be to make 4BC sound like 3AW or 6PR. It should be to take what can be learned from them and use it to build something that actually works for Brisbane.
Interestingly Tom Elliot made mention of a change to the stations logo is in the works as well. Imagine they will want to move away from the Nine era look.
He mentioned he was wearing one of the jackets with a past logo on it and was told off that he’s not to wear it, but he said even the current one will be replaced soon anyway.

2GB will celebrate its 100th birthday on air this weekend. Celebrations will start from tomorrow (Friday 21st August), with live OBs across the day at four iconic locations across Sydney. The actual birthday will be this Sunday (23rd August).
The one question I do have…
Where’s the free merch? ![]()
How sad that MRN/Nine Radio didn’t make this much of a celebration when sister station 2UE turned 100… but 2GB gets a whole heap. Giveaways, OB, station IDs with old audio & all…
Yeah I thought the same. It all feels a bit shallow the whole celebration. It’s like you only provide a card in the mail for one child but the favourite kid gets a banquet and a new car. 2ue is where it is because it might of been a threat to 2gb. Radio stations are now just another asset in a balance sheet rather than “a historical monument” that provided a great passed service to the community and hopefully into the future. I still marvel how a machine can play sound from “thin air”. A wonderful invention but I am rambling now
.
They do have celebrating 100 years sweepers on 2UE but I would say 2ue has contributed to Sydney radio to the same degree as 2gb if not more deserves better treatment but given it is now operated by Ace and is run on the smell of a oily rag I’m not too surprised.
Grubby said on Friday Lunch today that The Weekend Break will return on Sunday week (August 30).
With recent changes such as National News bulletins, this is great for localism!!
Formerly Fairfax’s Melbourne offices, who used to own The Age and 3AW.
It was brand new, state of the art at one stage there, didn’t really last long. Out the back of Docklands and hugging Southern Cross Station.
I remember the long-time one with the yellow dash, I think when it went to “693”, around 2008. Also when their equally long-time v/o artist started I tnink, who used to do the other Fairfax stations, who also had the same logo template. I remember around this time or 2009 they refreshed all the talent’s publicity images and their website as well. This was also around the time or just before they moved studios too I think into ‘Media House’.
