Sydney vs Melbourne rivalry

Yes! It always seems so lopsided I can’t believe it hasn’t expanded more towards Geelong and the west. The access to the CBD is excellent from places like Laverton vs say Glen Waverley particularly in peak.

I’d say a lot of that is the huge gap in the environment - at a similar distances from the CBD, the east is nice and leafy suburbs, while the west has a lot more of an industrial feel with fewer parks and worse public facilities.

Problem is that the areas in the west that have had the necessary urban renewal to overturn that difference, end up just being far too expensive - in which case why not just live in the nice established suburbs.

The east of Melbourne also receives more rainfall than the west, due to enhancement of showers across Port Phillip Bay and the orographic (uplifting) influence of the Dandenongs. The rain shadow of the Otways and in some places, the You Yangs, also contribute to a drier climate on the west side of Port Phillip.

Yes but more severe storm activity and flooding too

Interesting stats. Especially the huge difference between Sydney and Melbourne in regards to visiting places such as national parks, beaches, marinas, dog parks, plazas and public gardens. Sydney only down 27%, Melbourne down a whopping 75%.

I’m fairly sure this has to do with climate and weather at the moment. I suspect Brisbane would be even worse than Sydney at the moment. The weather has been sensational in Brisbane and Sydney and people are more likely to be walking, cycling etc. Sydney is a more outdoor city than Melbourne because of the climate, particularly at this time of the year.

Both states are seeing large reductions in new cases, so it would appear that Sydney is maintaining social distancing whilst being out and about.

So it doesn’t matter WHERE you are, as long as social distancing is maintained.

Pah, the weather in Melbourne is hardly unpleasant temperature wise at the moment. There have been some fairly warm days down there. The wind on some days is another matter (same in Bungendore too). Give me a nice still frosty morning- rather pleasant provided you’re dressed appropriately- over 15-16C with gale force wind any day.

I think Melburnians may be more communitarian and less selfish than Sydneysiders…but that would be wearing out a cliche…

Tend to agree. Melbournians are probably out-and-about in their local streets and green belts rather than having to travel afar and head to national parks, beaches, marinas, dog parks, plazas and public gardens like Sydneysiders appear to be.

I see people at the beach but that’s out of the city where I live, I think it may be down to the geography of the cities and where things are.

How much is a fine in New South Wales?

Victoria its $1620 for being out - without a valid reason.

I think the fine is roughly the same but the Victorian govt and police seem more draconian in their approach. They seem to think they’re the UK or something.

It’s working though, and usually they’ve been pretty ok in their focus.

True but it’s also working just as well in Queensland where they’ve had almost as many cases and they’ve been a bit less extreme.

I’d argue population spread and other factors such as housing would come into play as well. But maybe you’re right.

NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro trying to nab events from Melbourne. Including AFL Grand Final, Melbourne Cup, Grand Prix, Melbourne Comedy Festive, Melbourne Fashion Week.

Does he realise that Sydney has its own comedy festival (usually late April to mid May) and its own fashion week? Ridiculous.

At least it appears Mr Barilaro is turning his attention to disrupting goings-on outside his state, rather than interfering in by-elections within it. Although I know the Labor party for one greatly appreciated his interventions in the recent Eden-Monaro by-election.

But yeah, more provocative bullshit from another NSWer, designed to wind up a few Victorians - much like the frequent crap that spews out of the mouth of that horse racing guy who now runs the NRL.

I thought the comedy festival was whatever was happening in Macquarie Street?
