Almost 25 years already? Feels like an eternity ago. Was a happier time when Australia hosted the Olympics in 2000 with the Best Olympics Games Ever.
The Medal Ceremony for the Sydney Olympics Menās Marathon. Prior to 2004 the medals were handed out just before the Closing Ceremony.
Was it broadcasted on Channel 7 here?
The first part of the interview is about John revealing Cathy Freeman as the final torch bearer too early.
John Stanton more recently is the V/O for Seven News bulletins since 2020
24 more days and counting until the 25th anniversary and such a shame that Youtube is probably the sole destination for all the best action (For those looking forward to 2032) because Seven may probably wonāt again release any archives across the 16 days.
It is also worth mentioning that Western Australia received an encore screening of the Opening Ceremony and Seven News: National Late Edition was not shown at all.
Not sure itās worth the IOC bill for playing something they donāt have rights to

Arrival of the Olympic torch in Sydney on Day 99 of the Olympic Torch Relay. Hard to believe itās almost 25 years ago. What a time it was for Australia back then.
watching old footage of 2000 makes me excited for 2032 (especially as 2032 will be in my hometown)
Second Olympics I will witness in my lifetime. I was only 6 when Sydney 2000 happened. The video shows all the buzz and excitement on Olympic Eve
Apparently during the evening of the Opening Ceremony, Seven News: National Late Edition was not shown at all in Western Australia and the Opening Ceremony was reshown after 7:30 PM Local time.
Does anyone here have the 10 Late News/Sports Tonight bulletins from the evening of the Opening Ceremony? I know I have seen a trailer for a special edition of Nightline which aired 11:30 PM Local time on Nine.
I was a bit older and i even remember that morning in 1993 from monaco when we won the games.
thereās a number of parallels from Sydney to what Iām seeing now in Brisbane - lots of skepticism, doom and gloom forecasts and government argy bargy, but once the flame landed and the relay started it was like it wasnāt just a bit of fire.. it was a symbol of hope and optimism. i hope the same thing happens in 2032 if the mood is the same
The Salt Lake bribery scandal hanged over the IOC and even dragged Sydneyās bid into it with bribes being used to secure the 2000 and 2002 Olympics which were in the end successful. It ended up being as āThe best Olympic Games Everā by the time the Olympic Flame was extinguished during the Closing Ceremony
Well, the day has arrived! 25 years to the day since a large Television audience around Australia were tuned into Seven and watched the opening ceremony.
For those not interested in the Olympics, Nine had The best of Burkeās Backyard, Farscape and a Paul Hogan movie in Almost an Angel Scheduled while 10 scheduled a Friday double feature Family movie that consisted of Matilda andThe Naked Gun.
Also worth mentioning that ABC responded with Maccallum and The Royle Family.
Seven News bulletin that aired directly after the Opening Ceremony, 15 September 2000. Looks like a national bulletin from HSV7, read by Jennifer Adams?

Someone stated that this was from ATN7 and they flew Jennifer up there?
but Iām not 100% sure. The sets at the time were similar.
ATN7? Yes, thatās possible
EDIT: The Age Green Guide on 21 September 2000 reports that on the night of the Opening Ceremony, Seven had 91.1% of all viewers. By the laws of maths this would have left everyone else sitting on low single digit percentages
It is unclear if that is only for Melbourne but I would guess it was. Although it does comment that 10,436,000 watched the Opening Ceremony nationally ā 2,199,000 in Melbourne alone. (up against the Opening Ceremony, ABC News at 7pm was the highest rated program from the other networks, with 61,000!)
The Green Guide also noted that Seven Melbourne won the ratings week (prime time) with 50.1, followed by Nine (22), Ten (13.9), ABC (11.4) and SBS (2.6) ā noting that the week only included two days/nights of Olympic coverage, but as well as the Opening Ceremony (Friday) there was also Ian Thorpe and the Australian menās team competing in the 4 x 100m freestyle (1,349,000 viewers in Melbourne) and Thorpe in the 400m freestyle on Saturday night.
This wasnāt shown in Perth on the night of the Opening Ceremony due to an encore screening of the Opening Ceremony . Yes, this was filmed at HSV studios in Melbourne
On 10, did Matilda and The Naked Gun Movies rated higher than most of Nineās evening schedule during the evening of the Opening Ceremony?
The Age did not report those numbers
