Supermarkets and Retail
I always try to buy from independent butchers and greengrocers.
I went to the Queen Vic market on Saturday and every single butcher had trimmed most of the fat off the lamb loin chops. It’s the best part and they remove it! OTOH, the Woolies near me usually has a nice thick band of fat on theirs, so that’s where I buy them.

My butcher keeps the fat on the loin chops. They’re awesome like that, especially with smokey marinade.

Keeping the fat on lamb cutlets is a travesty though. I don’t want to be paying $50/kg for unnecessary fat.

Huh? Never said I don’t shop at independent retailers for things other than household items. Wouldn’t touch the slime covered filth in the deli section of my local Woolies with a ten foot pole. That said, I don’t purchase much fresh food as I’m usually traveling throughout the week which necessitates eating out.

I would never call them a miracle store but I like Aldi and their home brands can be good and they have some good specials occasionally (a PVR I bought from them about 8 years ago is still going!) but it is not my main choice although I do go there probably about once a week to top up on groceries (Also because there is an Aldi just two doors up from my work) but otherwise I try to stick to IGA or independents ahead of Coles/Woollies though.

No. Just your incorrect view as usual. The majority of people I know have tried and rejected Aldi.

Incorrect again, JBar - we were (or at least I was when I initiated this discussion) discussing the media coverage of Aldi - not whether certain individuals, who you know, have rejected it.

Yeah that’s cool - but I totally reject JBar telling me that media coverage has not been unbelievably unbalanced in total over the last decade. Example:

It’s the supermarket giant offering more than just milk and meat.

Nestled between the aisles, in the middle of every Aldi store, is a treasure trove.

what do you expect from ACA? We know much of their story content is infomercials.

But even though I do like Aldi I am surprised at the overly-positive coverage it gets in the Fairfax press. Seems almost every week there’s another pro-Aldi story. But I suppose even if there are people out there who don’t like Aldi at least its mere presence in the market is giving the Coles/Woollies duopoly something of a wake up call.

Surely Aldi paid ACA to say that, or Nine was making nice because there was an advertising contract in the works.

Like, isn’t that actually my whole point?

Not that I could tell.

Can’t even imagine what you’re trying to dispute here. Saying Nine has an arrangement with Aldi, is a conclusion from observing that Nine lacks critical objectivity in discussing Aldi.

I’m not disputing anything. I suggested that Aldi must be paying for such gushing coverage, you asked if that’s been your point, and I said not that I could tell, because I haven’t noticed you make that point. It was merely an observation.

Anyway, I still don’t understand what you want to say here.

I observed it’s raining. You let me know it’s raining…because there might be a cold front passing. Cool…end result is it’s raining.

The quality of some of the Aldi flat pack furniture is rubbish. I had to assemble an Aldi four piece outdoor setting for a friend, and it took me forever. The instructions were not that clear, the coffee table components were not absolutely square, and the holes for the bolts were all slightly out so the table is a bit skewiff. The chairs were not that well aligned either.

However, the dining table and chairs my friend got from IKEA were much simpler to put together - everything was in perfect alignment.

At Marsden Park in Sydney there is a Bunnings, IKEA, and Masters side by side, with an Aldi opening very soon, a Costco opening in a few months, and a homemaker centre with various businesses opening later this year. (And there is the Lindt factory outlet!) I have noticed that Masters has steadily increased the number of people going into their warehouses this year, probably attracted by the specials they have advertised - that’s why I have gone there.

A friend bought a bed from Aldi, it was trash the screw holes were missing and the bed just kept falling apart.

The only furniture I’ve bought from Aldi is a coffee table, and it’s holding up well after a few years. It is on carpet though, so I wouldn’t notice if it wasn’t completely level.

WTF? You are such a pain. My answer to your question was the observation (“merely an observation”, i.e. nothing more than that) that I hadn’t noticed you make the point about Aldi paying for gushing coverage, as opposed to implying anything beyond that, such as disputing something, which, from your response, you obviously thought I was doing. Have you got it now?

The Q’s to access Aldi in Perth today were still off the charts.

Why the hell would I?

Firstly, you’re not even sure that has happened. You’ve just made it up. You even framed your comment as such (“surely they have paid…” such was your disbelief that the coverage could not have been produced in any other way).

It’s not as if I was going to dip into Nine Network Ltd’s financial records to ascertain whether Aldi paid for this particular piece of media coverage, on that particular date, either. So to expect me, in making an observation on media coverage, to forensically examine Nine’s commercial arrangements (which doesn’t affect the actual final output which we were discussing in any case) is unfair.

Secondly, I was complaining about unbalanced press coverage. That the reason behind that may have been that Aldi paid for that coverage makes it even worse.

Maybe Salty, JBar can explain these two points to me. Further, I would like JBar to specifically explain why on one hand he is telling me that media coverage has simply not been unbalanced and I was incorrect to say so…while the next second liking a post stating that Aldi pays for positive media coverage. You couldn’t make it up. :joy:

On second thoughts, don’t worry.

Poco, the cheaper version of Freedom with a wider range of goods including electrical, is rumored to be expanding across the east coast in the next year. I’ve been to the Blacktown and Crossroads stores a few times and found that they have some good specials.

The South African based Steinhoff owns Freedom, Snooze, Bay Leather Republic, Poco, Best & Less, and Harris Scarfe. I hadn’t been into a Best & Less for many years until a couple of weeks ago, as I had always found their clothing to be very poorly made. But I was surprised to find that they have upped the quality, probably due to the Steinhoff takeover a couple of years ago I guess, and the clothes they now have are very good at good prices, I think.
