The way Chemist Warehouse operates needs to be looked at. The model they use to open chemists in certain areas looks rather dodgy - “franchisees” my foot.
As someone who takes a shitload of meds, I’m not exactly saving that much at a Chemist Warehouse. I get better value at my local neighbourhood chemist, which is in walking distance and personalised service - they actually know me.
I’m on some meds that some chemists refuse to dispense (I’m currently transitioning from male to female).
My local chemist warehouse refused to dispense the meds as “it’s against the head pharmacist’s beliefs” - Direct quote the first time i went in to fill a script for a testosterone blocker - i wasn’t even on E than.
I go to a smaller local one who specifically orders in my estrogen so its in stock. I’ve actually referred other trans people to this pharmacy as well.
not carrying meds due a religious or political belief should be, at least minimum ground to open another chemist within the same shopping centre, doing away with the location restrictions
I’d name snd shame that particular CW and pharmacist. Good on you for going elsewhere and referring others to them as well. They should be treated the same as doctors in beinf held to the Hippocratic oath - do no harm and dont let your religion get in the way of doing your job.
In NSW, these are the laws regarding pharmacy ownership (warning: Google AI generated):
In NSW, a single person or corporation can own up to five pharmacies. This rule aims to ensure access to pharmacists while also limiting local competition. To open a new pharmacy in NSW, a registered pharmacist or a partnership of registered pharmacists must be involved. The pharmacist needs to register the pharmacy business and their financial interest with the Pharmacy Council of NSW.
Here’s a more detailed look at the regulations:
Ownership Restrictions: A single person or corporation can hold a financial interest in up to five pharmacies in NSW.
Registration: Pharmacy businesses must be registered with the Pharmacy Council of NSW.
Relocation: When relocating, pharmacies must do so within 10km of the existing site.
New Pharmacy Approvals: The Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care also has rules for approving new pharmacies, especially in shopping centers and medical centers.
Location Rules: The rules for relocating or opening a new pharmacy can be found in the “Pharmacy location rules applicants handbook” available on the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care website.
CW (and others probably, but manly CW) provably find ways to get around this.
Honestly, it’s not even really in the top 10 of the worst stuff i dealt with since i started my transition.
P robably the worst was one major retailer (who stocked clothes of both genders) refusing me access to a single person room to try on a dress saying loudly “you are a man wanting to try on a dress” so most of the store heard. I know I don’t pass, but buying a new wardrobe is expensive and i like to spread it out.
on the flipside there are two stores i’d definitely like to commend as a non-passing transwoman who still dresses male most of the time.
first is Bras & Things. when I walked in and asked for a fitting (wearing male clothes) they were courteous, professional and treated me like any other customer. there was no look of shock or Suprise when i took my top off and they wished me well on my transition. They didn’t have my size but gave me some options for places to go online and get some.
the other is Dangerfield. their style is not my thing but it’s one of the only shops i can walk in, dressed fully male, having not shaved for a day or 2 and the staff will help me pick female clothing, allow me to try them on and even give me fashion advice. I’ve popped down a few times during lunch break and picked up a skirt or a blouse and once again i’m treated like a normal customer
online is almost never an option for me, esepcilly if its presents for the kids. better to buy in store and i can smuggle it in. if its delivered when the kids are home, it will turn into 50 questions.
I’ll be honest I don’t understand the thought process behind what you are doing , however I think your original chemist needs be reported for discrimination to be honest . Religion should never discriminate at any person’s whether work or not.
I’m glad that you have gone to a new chemist who is comfortable and not a turd. And also great to hear that you are having positive appearance with shopping for clothes.
No worries , it’s still rather new for an old 40 year old like me .
If it makes you happy and you want to be someone that you feel comfortable with then that’s okay . I still need to understand it myself , something I can learn through research.
