Supermarkets and Retail

Can we maybe have a thread for Supermarket and Retail Mocks or Hype so we can keep this topic on thread?

Saw this coming.

With Kmart already vacating and Big W moving in, it was only a matter of time before Coles pulled the pin.

Both stores used to be part of a “Super Kmart” style shop which had a dividing wall between the two shops.

Prior to Kmart pulling up stumps, it was very much a time warp to the mid 1990s.

Speaking of Super Kmart… (both ads from 1988)

I remember when Mandurah Forum had this. And when the ‘wall came down’…

Excerpts from the article about Coles Port Adelaide closing down

Australia’s largest Woolworths is a step closer to moving into Port Adelaide after its rival announced it will exit the site next month.

Coles has erected a sign outside of its Port Adelaide Plaza store telling customers “we’re saying goodbye on Sunday, February 9, at 5pm”.

Woolworths Group and investor Shaun Bonett’s Precision Group last year announced a deal to bring Woolworths and discount department store Big W to Port Adelaide Plaza, replacing the Coles and Kmart.

The impending closure of the Coles supermarket at the plaza will make way for Woolworths to move into the space in the coming months.

Big W moved into the space previously occupied by Kmart last year, officially opening its doors in November.

Excerpts from The Advertiser article about The Reject Shop leaving Rundle Mall

The owners of Rundle Mall’s Reject Shop have revealed why they have are closing its store permanently, after operating at the city hotspot for almost three decades.

A spokesman for Reject Shop told The Advertiser the decision came after the landlord declined to renew the lease, forcing the store to completely shut its doors next Thursday.

“The Reject Shop is disappointed that, after 27 years, the landlord at its Rundle Mall store has decided to not renew the lease,” the spokesman said.

Level one of the building is now available for lease through McGees Property, with a property listing describing it as suitable for a “funky office” or retail store.

Asked why the landlord did not renew the lease, McGees Property associate director Tim Pozza said: “The lessors are working on bringing new and exciting brands and retail to the CBD and Rundle Mall.”

A spokesman for The Reject Shop said all team members at the Rundle Mall store will be offered employment at another Reject Shop.

He encouraged customers to visit one of their 28 stores across the state, as they work to find a new Adelaide CBD store location.

I don’t think it was ever really Coles Myer’s plan to pursue the Super K strategy long term. They were seriously worried at the time with the entry of the South Africans who had created quite a stir.

Even though the name was phased out in 1990, it took a while for all locations to become either Coles or Kmart.

I did some work at Kmart as part of some training in around 2000. Had to use the staff facilities and Kmart had inherited the former SuperK bathrooms as it ran along the back wall of the store and behind Coles. The mens was about 20 cubicles in a row, with a row of as many sinks directly opposite. Then multiple shower/changing cubicles. They weren’t in use at the time, the whole show was very tired and neglected.

Myer (And Maybe David Jones) should re-introduce outlet clearance large format stores (At homemaker centers and maybe at Shopping Centres all in which are the size of an average Harris Scarfe/TK Maxx Store over a floor or two) in areas in which there is no store in that catchment. That would be the best way to go for both chains to still have the usual suburban stores.

Don’t they onsell their old stock to TK Maxx?

Aaaaah TK Maxx. The retail crap shoot.

Mirrabooka Square too, many moons ago… :relieved:

I walked into my first ever TK Maxx store last week. I was surprised to see they were selling Ben Sherman clothing.

It’s whatever they can get. It’s eBay with dedicated business hours.

The whole concept is Buyers scouting around for suppliers and picking up clearance or slow moving stock etc.

Some retailers sell end of season stock to them also then they re sell it. It’s always just bits and pieces.

You don’t walk in with any expectations, and if you manage to find something, then so be it. I can’t say I’ve found anything worthwhile vs say going to DFO and getting a more full range in sizing and articles. No idea how they have managed to survive here with such high leasing in the locations they reside.

I found the TK in the UK much better.

My 2025 retail predictions (Newcastle/Hunter region):

  • Target Charlestown gets converted into a Kmart
  • Target at either Kotara or Glendale closes and Big W replaces it
  • Woolworths in Raymond Terrace Central closes and is replaced with Coles
  • a major expansion of Jesmond Village is announced which will see Target, Coles and 40 additional retailers added
  • Either Kmart or Officeworks open in the former Belmont Bunnings store
  • Cheap As Chips and/or Dimmeys open their first Newcastle/Hunter stores
  • Huntlee shopping centre gains a Woolworths and/or a Kmart or Big W

Apparently Woolies is already eyeing the Belmont Bunnings site so then they can turn it into a Woolies supermarket.

(Paywall)

I’d like to see something like that - or a major expansion of Glendale.

Would be a good to have a 3rd major centre around here, as we only really have the 2 big centres here (Charlestown Square and Westfield Kotara) which oddly are less than 4 kms / 6 mins apart.

A 3rd centre was proposed for the Newcastle CBD back when David Jones was still around, but sadly never happened. DJs since got closed as well. The Newcastle CBD (Hunter St mall) is a very sad looking space retail wise these days, the old Market Square centre has now been demolished too and is just a vacant block of land.

That seems to be a trend in many regional CBDs, Geelong is another.
