Perhaps because of the Terry White Chemart merger they’re would be a duopoly?
This was their main worry. There issue is that if this goes ahead it may turn out to be bad for consumers.
I had my bag checked today at Coles as i was checking out.
I told them i am very embarrassed and not using there self service never again.
P.s. i never got an apology
It was probably just a random check like at the airport. I’m sure you weren’t targeted?
For doing their job ? Can you give me some context? If they ask you to check your bag that is their right in their store.
Did something happen before they asked you to check your bag ?
And it is my right to not to use there self service anymore!
Very true but why do you think they chose you?
Coles is definitely pushing an agenda with this self service ‘everyone is a criminal’ mandate. It wouldn’t be surprising that some staff would get confused as to what is required.
Then they should remove the self serve. That would solve their problem and make the public happy again. Horrible things those self serving machines are!
I was re using a Coles bag that I purchased a couple of days ago,and she thought I was using a new one and not paying for it.
I work at a supermarket and can talk about this a bit. You’re supposed to check everyones bag regardless of whether you think they could be stealing or not. Of course this is rarely 100% enforced and sometimes it just isn’t possible to check every single bag that goes in and out of the store. Some people take it personally, others don’t. But it’s just part of the job. Please don’t take these checks personally, if you haven’t stolen they aren’t personal they’re just carrying out the policy.
I don’t like doing it. I think 99% of supermarket employees will feel the same. Store-level managers don’t even like it most of the time, but it’s something that is checked on regular store audits. It’s a shame these policies need to be implemented at all. But it’s just part of the job and we have to do it.
I can totally understand being annoyed at having your bag checked, but fighting against it gets you nowhere (other than maybe not having to have your bag checked if you make a big enough deal about it. In that case… congratulations I guess? You’ll probably not be allowed back in the store though). The amount of verbal abuse, swearing, insults and threats I’ve endured thanks to a corporate policy I have to carry out as part of my employment is disgusting. I can assure you MANY employees provide feedback on this experience, but corporates don’t care.
Please don’t be an asshole to that employee that is simply carrying out that mandatory part of the job. They don’t deserve it, you probably aren’t the first that day and won’t be the last. It’s a thankless job with a lot of parts that are there to appease corporates. People who are assholes to service workers have a special place in hell imo.
(And I want to clarify I’m not insinuating or assuming that southernguy or anyone else here who has shared their experience with this was an asshole over this policy, just more of a blanket statement overall)
Sounds annoying but that could happen at the human check out too though.
They might not see you pick your bag up from the trolley and ask you if it’s new. Or they might not even ask you and scan it anyway.
That is happening in the US. Walmart went all in on self checkout but is now backtracking incredibly fast. Some stores have rebuilt the staffed checkout areas again and the remaining self checkout areas are closed more often than open.
Doesn’t stop it from being an unpleasant experience.
I think the issue here wasn’t so much the check, but the seemingly rude and accusatory manner in which it was done.
Love it.
Get it done here!
As a fellow supermarket employee, i 1000% agree.
I was very polite about it as i work with people as well.
I have never, EVER had a bag checked at a supermarket. Kmart/Target/Big W yes - Coles/Woolies/IGA - never.
How dare people do their job?
