Supermarkets and Retail

I noticed Miranda had 30-50% off store wide.

The receivers of Dick Smith announced today the remaining Australian and NZ stores would all close by the end of April. The list of first batch of closures can be found here
I recently passed by Dick Smith store at The Glen and the shelves were 1/4 empty.

I’m certainly very interested what happens with the buildings - whether many will sit empty, or if there’s tenants waiting to get in.

They have some really good locations, though in some of the shopping centres they’ve probably already got all the major retailers that would normally fill such spots.

I’m sure major shopping centre operators like Westfield will have absolutely no trouble finding tenants to fill the gaps that the closure of Dick Smith stores would leave.

there was an advert in the financial review in january from jaycar asking exiting dick smith landlords to contact them if they were interested in having jaycar take over DSE sites.

theres also a well known american retailer thats looking at a whole swathe of DSE stores to really ramp up an entry into the aussie market from what i’ve heard as well.

Ironic in Westfield Geelong, The DSE location used to be a Borders Bookshop as well.

In Westfield Doncaster, the ABC Shop closed two months ago but the space is still boarded up. The imminent closure of Dick Smith means the landlord has to find two replacement tenants in a short period.

Supabarn have sold a number of their stores in the ACT and NSW to Coles. Three of the ACT stores will be closed for a few weeks for conversion from next month.

The last ABC Shop in QLD (Robina) closes its doors for the last time today. I’m pretty sure it’s the last in Australia to close

Castle Hill ABC shop closed this week too.

When did the QVB one close? Do they have a new tenant there yet?

Cheers Ryan, any ideas which ones? Can’t seem to find anything out about them.

This was discussed on radio this morning.

It was mentioned that there will now be about 200 ABC Centes (in Sanity stores etc) that carry ABC products like DVDs and music. If you go to ABC Shop store locator - it now shows the centres instead.

IGA has been slowly doing this in Perth as well, selling stores in prime locations (or locations that are about to be redeveloped) to Coles, or in some cases swapping locations with them.

Wanniassa is closing mid April for a three week conversion to Coles. Kaleen and Canberra City were closing mid May from memory for a similar period. Not sure about Five Dock and Sutherland. All other stores are remaining as Supabarn.

There was talk about the Supabarn at Sans Souci becoming a Coles and then there was a lot of backlash in the media about that. It seems like they’ve decided not to sell, at least for now.

I didn’t even know that there were Supabarn stores in Sydney! There mustn’t be many around (or only based in certain areas, certainly not where I live) because I’ve never seen any major advertising from them.

There’s about five I think. They’re a Canberra based company and only had the Five Dock store in Sydney until the last few years when they opened a few more.

SMH reports that Caltex will reinvent convenience retailing and could sell ready-made meals, bottled wine and online purchases. It’s a good idea if it can diversify to distinguish itself from other service station networks like BP, Shell and 7-Eleven.

Oh which ones Squee?

Didn’t see anyone mentioning it here, but it was disappointing to see Apple reseller Next Byte closing down their stores recently.

It wouldn’t have been too much of a deal in the large cities that already have actual Apple stores, but in smaller cities Next Byte was the only Apple reseller available.

For example, my old hometown of Mackay in Central Queensland. Next Byte was the only Apple reseller store in the city, they had a large store with a cafe inside it, next to Myer in one of the shopping centres there which was always busy because it was the only place you could take your Apple products with problems, etc. but due to the entire brand being shut down that store is now gone.

It’s a simpler situation here in Townsville, the only Apple authorised resellers we have are Next Byte and a shonky little small business. Without Next Byte now, there are limited options in regards to Apple products
