Are they? People were going up and down the escalators to level 1 as usual when I was last there a couple of weeks ago. There are also parcel lockers on level 2 which still seem to be operating.
They closed off level 3 a long time ago (15-20 years). From memory they had their photo centre up there, can’t remember what else.
It recently opened a new store at Blackburn Square (formerly known as North Blackburn Shopping Centre), which is undergoing a massive redevelopment with Coles and several stores still to come.
not sure if it’s closing or not (i can’t go in and check yet - i have the spicy cough) but as i was going past Mt Ommaney today from the doctors the large Big W sign facing dandenong road is gone. (the one seen here)
I have a few more days in Iso but when i’m out i’ll investigate
I know there was word about a year ago that this was going to happen but I’m still surprised that it actually did close with the current K-mart boom. It was on a busy road off a freeway exit so seemed like the perfect location. This was our local K-mart growing up. I still remember all the way back as a very very young kid when it had a restaurant/cafe within it.
This K-Mart seemed to essentially be the main drawcard at Brandon Park Shopping Centre so I’m not sure if this will spark the beginning of the end for the small shopping Centre. What exactly is replacing it? (I can’t access that article). I think I heard a Chemist Warehouse… which if true they are everywhere now so I think Brandon Park could die a slow death.
Speaking of M-City - I went there for the first time on Friday evening. I’m not sure what its like during the day but it was pretty dead. Not a lot of people in the food court and the K-mart there was very quiet too. I assume that it was built with the intention of relying on Monash Uni being nearby plus hoping to lure International students. The fact that it was quiet was appealing to me though especially with cinemas there, they might be a better option than Chadstone.
That Herald Sun report didn’t mention any specific on what would replace Kmart at Brandon Park, although it said there was a planning application to Monash Council to redevelop the shopping centre as a mix of apartments and commercial buildings, with shops on ground floor.
While M-City’s location rightly suggests its target is Monash Uni students, it is also hoping to attract residents from nearby Clayton, Mulgrave and Springvale, after the closure of Waverley Gardens cinema in 2008.
Target in Southport Park has been a Coles for a few years now.
And fun fact. The original Big W was at Sundale Shopping Centre in Southport which shut down C. 1989/1990. Big W had a few years absence from the Gold Coast and didn’t re-appear until Burleigh Heads had a shopping centre extention about 5-6 years later.
Few Other Vicinity Malls (Buranda Village (QLD), Box Hill Central (VIC)) have planning being looked at so come a few weeks time at Vicinity’s Annual results report, hope we will know more about Morley Galleria.
I still don’t get why they still have WE SELL FOR LESS logos at the front of the stores. It’s over 15 years old. Would be like Coles still having the below logo at the front of its stores. I do find it quite strange that they invest millions inside the store renovating but bypass the front logo as you walk in. Last time I checked it doesn’t cost a million to instal and paint a new sign. Weird.
