So that leaves IGA as the only major recognised supermarket with in-store butchers. Does Drakes do it in South Australia anyone know?
Several Woolworths in my area have an in-store butchersâ counter with a smallish range of meats, Iâve seen staff cutting from larger pieces and also restocking with already cut pieces. All the usual pee packed stuff as well. The Colesâ near me have been all prepacked as long as I have I used them, the local IGA appears to be prepacked (or at least off-site but not to the same standard as the big two) also a independent Leoâs who have in-store butchers but all done out the back in those little black trays.
Pre I hopeâŚ
My two nearest Woolworths have in-store butchers.
I thought Woolworths stopped using instore butchers? Or is that just Western Australia? The meat for WA is processed at a packing centre in Bunbury.
All four of my local Woolworths have full blown butchers that take up a whole corner of the store.
Not that I get my meat from there. Iâm a pest. I go to Woolworths first then the local butcher then the bakery. Try and spend my money on the small local business.
Mine has an upmarket butcher - its always worth having a look whats in the window on a sunday afternoon while shopping because you can pick up some decent bargains
Almost all new locations in Perth / WA have in-store butchers counters attached to the Deli, however this is separate to the meat department which mostly consist of items packed at a central location.
Woolworths Technically doesnât have butchers anymore. most of the qualified butchers are now gone. The butcher the customer sees in the store is basically just an extension of the deli.
Today was the grand opening of the Karrinyup Shopping mall expansion in Western Australia.
My thoughts on the new Karrinyup Shopping Mall: At the DJs end, the new Food Hall is great but could do with major chains like Subway, Oporto etc and it has views of Lake Gwelup and Perth City as well. Beautiful International Fashion and Beauty Stores which includes Sephora (Long lines and crowds), Coach, Tommy Hilfiger, Coco Republic, Ralph Lauren and soon the Lego Store. Such a massive mall now and what we have to all look forward to is more of the Myer end (Already new Coles and Aldi as well as Fresh Food section) that will also include the Cinemas and Restaurant section next month.
My local still has a couple of qualified butchers, I wonder how theyâre paid though, may have been happy to take a cut and keep a job. Itâs sad to see them spending chunks of their shift emptying cardboard boxes of prepacked meat. When theyâre not on its also staffed by the deli but they wonât do any butchering.
My store still has one maybe 2 qualified butchers. Normally anyone who is fully qualified in any tried will be on a different pay rate than general staff. It doesnât matter if there are only one or two butchers there they still have to be paid their pay award.
Looks like Woolworths are opening another Metro store next month up near the QV Markets, 611 Elizabeth St. Didnât they close down some of the inner city Metro stores?
They closed down 2 of the Melbourne CBD locations IIRC. I guess the budget for new store openings for Metro must be unchanged still.
The two Metro stores which closed down were at the basement of Melbourne Central (right opposite the barrier gates of Melbourne Central railway station at the Elizabeth Street end), and on Swanston Street near Bourke Street.
Is it normal for Woolworth Metro stores to be in the suburbs? Near me there are two recently opened stores in Ascot Vale. I have found it a bit strange when there is a Coles, Woolworths and Aldi at Moonee Ponds, plus a Woolworths at Highpoint Shopping Centre close to the stores.
I went to Costco at Docklands earlier today and it was packed. Had to park at the outside carpark near the boom gate entrance. Not one spot was available inside undercover.
The intent of the Metro stores are to be for convenience rather than a full grocery shop. Iâd say theyâre giving them a shot in suburban areas of a certain density to see how they go.
In contrast, Woolworths have opened 2 full-line supermarkets in inner suburban (less than 4km from CBD) Perth in the last 6 months, and have another 2 more opening in the next 12 months, with no metroâs on the horizon.
That might explain it, one of them is sitting under an apartment block.
Woolworths has always been a bit more ambitious in CBD areas vs Coles.
Woolworths has full line supermarkets in Docklands/QV/Crown. Bigw located in QV.
Brisbane also. 2 Full line supermarkets in the CBD and a BIGW also.
Coles only has its express/local format in those. They have a store at World Square in Sydney, always completely crazy busy.
