Supermarkets and Retail

Would love to see a Virgin Megastore back there too, but yeah, nah, not gonna happen.

A nice little 4 minute retrospective of 60 years of Chadstone shopping centre.

Great video.
It is narrated by Peter Hitchener (Nine News Melbourne anchor) as well.

It doesn’t have a monopoly in the domestic parcel space. Most of the competition is significantly worse than AusPost (CouriersPlease, Fastway/Aramex comes to mind), and the big global players like DHL, TNT/Fedex, etc often rely on AusPost anyway for last mile delivery, especially in rural and outer suburban areas.

Agree totally.

Not to mention that you’re also supporting local jobs and local businesses and are more likely to get better after sales support.

I’ve got two parcels pending delivery with Australia Post - one is nearly two months late and the other is coming up to six weeks. I wouldn’t mind but they are both going to a parcel locker at a major sorting centre so are as easy as deliveries come.

I’ve switched to click and collect since I got my second jab at the end of August.

Looks like EG’s battle with Ampol is not over yet. They’re now trying to get ‘out’ of the 15 year deal they signed with Ampol (when they were known as Caltex Australia). According to the paywall article in The Australian (24/09) they are arguing get that deal overturned. Claiming that locking them in for a 15 year deal is anti-competitive.

Ampol has also responded with reported rumours of a ‘takeover’ offer of the entire EG portfolio (The Australian, 28/09), bringing the former Woolworths Caltex stations back ‘in-house’, but under Ampol ownership. As rumours emerging that EG are looking at exiting the Australian market.

This will be interesting times with EG/Caltex (formerly Woolworths Caltex).

Online shopping is the new norm now. Anyone who has a store now basically needs to have an online store as well in some form or they will fall behind!

You’d think most retailers would’ve been told that more than two decades ago!

This has been ongoing for a while now, it’s why we’ve seen no rebranding at EG sites.

Also doesn’t surprise me, the fact they’ve barely rolled out their own brand outside of a small handful of store locations in Sydney and Melbourne indicates they are hesitant when it comes to large scale CAPEX and committing to the market. Was always an odd acquisition anyway considering the EG brand has zero recognition in this country.

There would probably be some overlap with EG/Caltex and Ampol stations nearby each other that could raise some concern by the ACCC, if a takeover offer by Ampol happens to be confirmed. Although this could be sorted by either closing the less busier site or selling it off to another operator.

There’s also a number of suburbs in Sydney and Melbourne where previously non-Woolworths affiliated Caltex had since been refurbished to became Ampol Woolworths Metro sites, with a few suburbs now having 2 sites within metres of each other (EG/Caltex and Ampol Woolworths Metro) where WW 4c fuel redemption offers and Everyday Rewards points are accepted.

Herald Sun reports (paywall) that Woolworths has won council approval to build a $20 million supermarket in Dandenong North in Melbourne’s south east. The site on the corner of Gladstone Road and David Street was formerly owned by German supermarket giant Kaufland, before it off-loaded the property to Woolworths in June last year. A BWS outlet and six speciality stores will also be constructed on site.

Woolworths has dropped the price of its “Bag for Good” shopping bags from 99c to 50c until January 11, 2022.

They’ve been routinely discounting these bags to 20 cents every few catalogue cycles.

The next phase of Karrinyup Shopping Centre’s Expansion in Western Australia opens October 7 this will include more international retailers (Including Sephora) as well as the new Cafe Terrace on the Eastern end of the Mall.

Also, I still keen to re-see plans for other Major Western Australian shopping malls such as Cockburn and Morley. I also hope that we all get to see the Booragoon plans in the next 3 to 6 months.

I’m not sure what Ampol means for any Woolworths deal, in that it could be void.

Virgin will jump at the chance to tieup with Ampol. They cannot get into any deal with EG as they are tied to Woolworths/Qantas. 7/11 is such a token investment for Virgin would be a good opportunity.
