Supermarkets and Retail

They are possibly getting good deals from landlords (ie rent free 10 years, on a 20 year term) to take up some spaces in Malls that will just sit empty for eternity. Better off giving a major a discount vs the landlord investing capex into the space (normally another food court) that the landlord will never get a return on.

Some BIGW sites are still empty, and I’m not sure if Masters still have empty stores kicking around. I think the evidence is well and truly out there to landlords who wish to walk the tight rope.

Speaking of Christmas, question for those who aren’t in lockdown. Have Kmart//Big W/Target bought out their Christmas stuff yet?

not yet at least for Kmart.

I went shopping at Coles this afternoon and noticed that Christmas puddings were already available, and there were hundreds on display.

Pretty standard for the week of / after fathers day as this is the trigger to start filling seasonal sections with Christmas stock (with a brief break of Halloween in October).

How long since the shopping centre had a refurb? That flooring looks very 1980s.

I’d say that’s vintage 1992. Heritage Green and Cobalt Blue all the rage.

It’s terrazzo style so I suspect mid 90’s as that is when that flooring style really started to take off in shopping centres - 80’s would be individual grouted tiles.

The shopping centre opened in late 90s I believe. It’s also a central train station.

They recently opened a new expansion with Woolworths and Myer refurb which is much nicer. The new Kmart in the previous Target space is much bigger as-well.

If they were looking to renovate, they could do something like Chadstone with the roof. It’s very open and spacious.

Reminds me a little of Macarthur Square in Campbelltown NSW.

And Galleria in Perth.

A lot of shopping centres look the same on the inside. Plenty of glass ceilings and white metal.

Would Bayside in Frankston count?

Signs have gone up indicating a coles local and a liquorland will be opening at Albert Street Brisbane (here )

considering within a one block radius we have a liquorland and 2 coles supermarkets i wonder if the plan is to close the two supermarkets (at a minimum the one at queens plaza i can see going - it’s diagonally opposite a wollies in the McArthur building that is much better patronised and has a better seleciton of stock)

Why doesn’t Amazon allow paypal as a payment option :frowning: Is a Visa Debit card considered a "credit card " ? maybe tha is why i have not received any communication from Amazon…

“There was an IT issue with the fresh produce ordering part on cole’s online website today for stores from Gladstone to Emerald and Rockhampton.”

Is a response I got on a local Facebook page… as to why i couldn’t search for fruit or vege on Coles in my area.

Ampol Woollongabba are getting a complete forecourt replacement, tanks replacement and the shop being refurbished from a late 90s/early 2000s ‘Star Shop’ to a ‘proper’ Foodary with Barista Coffee.

Ampol Burpengary (up the road from the EG Caltex Woolworths in that area) are also getting the same Forecourt/Foodary shop refurbishment and tank replacement.

If anyone’s curious about what shopping at Big W within an area of concern during lockdown looks like:

(I popped in to buy a washing basket after the arse end of our old one fell apart, in case you were wondering)
