Supermarkets and Retail

That’s why department stores like Myer are being replaced by supermarkets like Woolies and eateries.

Why are Coles and Woolworths doing so well lately? Well aside from the fact they’ve been our two most dominant supermarket chains, the increasing cost of food due to the drought and bushfire crisises may have something to do with it!

Fascinating considering the media, particularly newscorp was making articles on the monthly hyping up the imminent arrival of the brand. No doubt expect that they crunched the numbers and realised that they’d be losing money for a decade before turning a profit in the same way as Masters did for Woolies and Bunnings UK did for Wesfarmers.

263 staff will be made redundant, including 21 head office staff. Eleven NSW stores, nine Victorian stores, seven Queensland stores, six Western Australia stores, three South Australian stores and one Tasmanian store will close.
According to Herald Sun, the Victorian stores shutting their doors are at Doncaster, Eastlands, Echuca, Forest Hill, Karingal, Rosebud, Southland, The District Docklands and Watergardens.

End of an era.

The good news is that Dimmeys will keep operating in Victoria under a new management.

The management restructure has seen part-owner Doug Zappelli take over the day-to-day running of the retail chain, famous for rock-bottom prices.

Mr Zappelli will push ahead with a program to close all 15 Dimmeys stores in New South Wales, Queensland and Tasmania.

But he will now keep open up to a dozen stores in Victoria from a network of 16.

Stores that will shut include Geelong and Swan Hill.

Under a new business model, Mr Zappelli will also sell a number of stores to existing store managers who will operate them under the Dimmeys brand.

Seriously, how do those things not get checked by the supermarkets.

I wonder if this will encourage Berkelouw-Harry Hartog to open in some of the larger universities. They replaced the Co-op Bookshop at the ANU in Canberra and seem to be going along ok.

Otherwise students will have to rely on university’s own bookshop or that run by student unions.

What universities own their own bookshop? That is what the Co-op was for.

Or the internet, which is where 90%+ get their books anyway.

my uni (QUT in brisbane) has a guild run bookstore, but they did close down the guild run second hand bookshop (which was in a different location)

Pretty much all WA universities run their own bookshops.
