Supermarkets and Retail

Pssst… I’m pretty sure those pics are from 10-20 years ago.

Whoops  Should have noticed it wasn’t linked to the posts further up the page.

It was from about 2004/5. It was the last Holly’s in South Australia.

What store was that?

He is the literal definition of a one trick pony then I guess. It’s almost identical to Coles’ branding.

Just went to the BiLo website and saw their catalogues, I don’t know what they used to look like but the prices and the hands look exactly like the Coles ones in there now.

One of the reasons the Coles Group & Bunnings (AKA Wesfarmers) have been successful & strategies have worked very well in recent years, is also due to their structure/operations.

(e.g.)
All seperate Head Offices (Coles - Hawthorn East, Melb; Kmart - Mulgrave, Melb; Target - Geelong; Officeworks - Bentleigh East, Melb & Bunnings - Hawthorn East).

Woolworths Ltd on the other hand… Is mangled & packed into one site at Bella Vista, Sydney.

No clear focus or vision. Now they’ve been sacking staff & closing stores from Woolworths & Big W

Though it has been reported that Target HQ is moving to Melbourne (after the inflated profits scandal), and that some Target stores will convert to Kmart.

Please explain how having head offices spread out over a city is better than having them all in one site. Having management cross the city to meet up is an advantage? As if. You make no sense at all.

Is this another attempt by you to make it look like Melbourne is somehow superior to Sydney by grasping at straws? Where did you get your Business Degree?

Correct.

Department Stores division CEO & Target managing director Guy Russo (recently departed long-time Kmart managing director), is a very smart & liked guy :+1:

What?

I don’t even know how to reply to that …

they even have Curtis Stone!

I think its funny that its Bilo, given Coles used to run a similar brand

You might need to explain how this supports your claim.

Oh, I was saying how it’s much better to have seperated subsidaries/divisions

Where respective CEOs/managing directors and their teams are able to focus/work ONLY on their company.

In Woolworths case, it seems very convoluted, with every subsidary/division at the one site.

(As is well documented by Woolworths “we’ve lost our way” & recent reports have said there are staff re-structures/sackings across Woolworths & Big W).

Russo hasn’t left Kmart, he is now running both Kmart and Target.

The new ones with the giant loaf of bread wearing a chef’s hat riding a giant red hand like a bucking bull in the middle of a field (now that’s a sentence!) always crack me up.

Likewise the one with the chicken in place of the bread.

I work in one of said Melbourne head offices and your claim makes no sense whatsoever. Coles Group Head Office also supports businesses such as Vintage Cellars and Spirit Hotels – distinctly seperate businesses that don’t seem to be impacting on Coles’ recent success.

Let me clarify…

Vintage Cellars, 1st Choice Liquor & Spirit Hotels are DIVISIONS of Coles Supermarkets Pty Ltd. With ONE Managing Director overseeing (John Durkan).

Target, Kmart, Officeworks & Bunnings are seperate SUBSIDARIES of Wesfarmers and are in no way related to Coles’ operations.

So my original statement is correct, Wesfarmers’ individual subsidaries (or businesses) Head Offices are seperated/in different locations.

Seems to be working great

Thanks for the clarification. I – of all people – obviously wouldn’t be aware of this…

Yep, you’re correct on this one. You’re simply stating a fact.
Your assertion that this in any way contributes to Westfarmer’s relative success compared to that of Woolworths’ is unfounded and most likely incorrect.

Okay, well I’ve given you my reasons why (this format of operations, assists in focus/strategy as opposed to being complex/convoluted) & I’m not going to detail it again :expressionless:
