The Ampol Woolworths Metro store is not operated by EG. Those are owned and operated by Ampol Retail (formerly Calstores Pty Ltd), with staff wearing co-branded Ampol and WW Metro uniforms.

Almost all of the “Ampol Woolworths Metro” (including those under renovation) were formerly the Calstores-operated “Caltex Woolworths” JV stores (which were really Starmart with “Woolworths” shopfronts and staff wearing Star Mart uniforms) prior to Woolworths selling up their Petrol business to EG.

The Woolworths owned stores (540 of them) of the old “Caltex Woolworths” business are all in the process of being rebranded to EG Australia, which similar to the 7-11 Mobil branding, with EG being the dominant branding and Caltex/Ampol branding only on the pylons and pumps.

I know. I’m only speaking about the basics. This is currently going on at the former Woolworths/Caltex servo now EG. where I am. They still accept everyday rewards cards even though they’re no longer Woolworth’s servos.

Looking at that store on Google Maps, that looks like a EG owned and operated Woolworths Caltex with the Woolworths shopfront. I would assume that is eventually going to rebranded as EG.

A lot of the old Woolworths owned Caltex servos similar to the Forest Hill site had the small ‘dogbox sized’ shop at most servos that were located inside a shopping centre.

Woolworths are now proceeding with offloading Dan Murphy’s. Basically that only leaves two more business left, Woolworths NZ and BIGW.

I guess they will be offloaded at some point this decade. I assume Private equity would pickup BIGW and another Kiwi supermarket could takeover the Countdown brand

Why would they offload either brand? Big W is finally turning a profit at last.

I think BIGW is too unpredictable in the long run and operates in a volatile part of the market. Growth could stagnate fairly easily. They are not opening any more stores while Kmart has not stopped opening stores for the last decade.

They have already lost a few billion on that business when looking at one off impairments, losses etc in the last decade, they will want that back.

A resurgent stand-alone Coles should be top of mind for WOW going into this decade.

Please keep Big W going. I’m sick to death of the overgrown Reject Shop that is Kmart.

Don’t forget about the number of stores they had to close down and staff cuts that they had to make to get there…

With Target being run into the ground, Big W’a future looks reasonably good as a distinct offering in comparison to Kmart.

I don’t think they’re quite done yet with Big W, a few more rounds of good profit results and increased EBITDA will allow the market value of the business to continue to increase - keep in mind the business was performing so poorly a few years ago it was essentially worthless. Woolworths have been very lucky that Wesfarmers strategy with Kmart/Target has resulted in making one brand dominant and the other weak / irrelevant.

There’s been zero indication they have any interest in offloading the NZ business, especially considering it has become more and more integrated with the AU supermarkets business over time.

I’m sure they won’t forget where the business went wrong last decade, getting distracted by Dick Smith and Masters. That air of arrogance that existed within the leadership of Woolworths last decade seems to have finally evaporated in the last couple years.

I find it kind of funny to see this sentiment all over the internet yet Kmart continues to be more and more successful. So many people online that miss the old Kmart, yet before Wesfarmers came along and changed the trajectory of the business it was mere months away from getting absorbed into the Coles and Target brands…

Because people want cheap shit. They don’t care where it comes from, as long as it’s cheap. Kmart has cottoned onto this. Now people fetishise over it.

Yet during the pandemic people got the shits because they couldn’t get the cheap shit out of China. All of them do it, don’t get me wrong. But Kmart seems to be the worst offender of the lot.

If Target vanished tomorrow would anyone notice?

You’l find out soon enough.

They closed a store near me and looking back they Woolworths had an impairment of Half a billion to close 30 stores. Looking at google they have only closed about 8.

I wonder if they are waiting for the Target/Kmart reshuffle before closing any more. In other words, some potential Bigw closures might now be profitable after Target removed. Good news for staff there I guess.

Ampol have created a very good television and radio campaign featuring ‘Streets Of Your Town’ by The Go-Betweens. Have heard it a lot and can’t get that song out of my head.

Probably better known to many of Media Spy’s regional Australia correspondents as “The 2001 Prime/GWN Television Station ID song”!

Just one year? Felt like they kept banging that drum for much longer than that.

I actually really like Target. I wouldn’t like to see it gone.

The original song was only used for about a year but yes, a guitar instrumental version of “Streets Of Your Town” was used in the 2002-03 IDs for Prime & GWN…at least going by what I’ve seen/heard online in the past.
