I get it’s a “bit of fun” but I really don’t like the usage of breaking news on the lower-third there. It should be reserved for actual ‘breaking news’ (which is debatable in and of itself what constitutes that).
Same category for me as fake news bulletins in radio/TV ads or sirens in radio ads, it diminishes the value of the real product/event.

Something that has always annoyed me with both Sunrise and Today is how incredibly loose they are with the breaking news banner. To me, a breaking news story is one that is of major significance and is happening or developing at the moment of reporting. A house fire that happened at 2am and is quickly brought under control, while sad, is barely a breaking news story at the time, and certainly isn’t one at 8am the next morning, which I have seen happen.

The amount of ‘breaking news’ these days makes you wonder why commercial news is even worth it. NBC Nightly News in the states is the worst for it. Literally everything is a ‘Breaking News’ on there.

Today’s Richard Wilkins was the MC for the John Farnham concert, however Peter Ford said on 3AW breakfast today that not one network was interested in showing the concert last night.

I didn’t think it was a matter of not being interested, it was being shown in cinemas live first, then as a movie release before Christmas; I’m guessing it will make it to television at some point.
