Doesn’t make it any less interesting.
I agree - but also don’t think we are needing to know the answer.
Liam Tapper is usually on the road and Shaun White is a meh news presenter. Perhaps Gemma is just trying to keep her presenting skills up by fronting a bulletin every now and then - might be her choice.
We already know that Eddie wanted to scale back her days so that she could focus on her health, and perhaps that extends to the 5am news.
Seems to be the most likely reason.
The question is whether Gemma should be reading the bulletin because of the conflict with her role as Director of News Operations.
Do you see the coach of a football team take to the field to replace an injured player? Absolutely not.
A nonsensical comparison.
It was noted she would still contribute on air when she moved in to her new role.
It’s not too different to the Sunrise EP reporting on weekend sunrise. Or a chief of staff filing on the 6pm news.
Not really.
Gemma is their boss. She is subjecting herself to the same standards that she and other managers preach to their employees. If for example, she was to make some sort of mistake or error whilst reading the news, it would be a terrible look.
Bottom line is it is a conflict of interest and completely wrong for her to be fronting news bulletins. Stay behind the scenes and focus on your job there.
Off-topic but I can recall Lleyton Hewitt (Australia Davis Cup captain) having to step in to play doubles in 2016.
So what if she makes a mistake? It’s barely the end of the world - as it never is when anyone makes an error.
It really isn’t a conflict of interest at all. There just isn’t the clear demarcation of roles like that in a newsroom as you suggested with your footy team example, people are expected to float and pitch in should circumstances arise.
Gemma is in a management position - but I think you’re elevating how much power she has in that position, mostly it is about strategy and as her title suggests, operations.
Precisely.
Might be a conflict of interest if she went in to read the news on 9 for the morning.
But there’s no conflict whatsoever here.
Exactly what I was going to say. I am surprised Gemma is even at work at that time.
Perhaps she’s a team player and likes to lead by example.
Anyway it’s all just speculation.
Or newly appointed Nine News Perth news director Michael Genovese filling in bulletins around Perth and the late news, as he does quite often…
My understanding is that she is the Director of News Operations, not in charge of talent.
Look, if Gemma is happy to present the news at 5am on top of her other duties - and it seems like she is - more power to her, surely? I can’t imagine many other news bosses doing the same.
While there is a lot of discussion about a new sports presenter on Today, Sunrise seems to get by without one.
In my view, you don’t need a sport presenter every day. It might be good to have one on Fridays and Mondays during footy seasons to talk about upcoming games and results but that’s usually enough.
Well TBH there’s other sports other than NRL and AFL.
In my view Gemma should be performing in a operations role so she can clearly understand what the team does and the challenges they are experiencing day to day. The whole C Suite should be doing that and would in a company I manage. For example going out with one of the 6pm reporters and observing what they do for the whole day. Sitting with a producer for the whole day etc. They would need to do this at minimum once every quarter and if they don’t it’s a mark against their employment.
