You can speculate all you like. We will never know and quite frankly who cares? Maybe he didn’t want the main gig. It’s a very big lifestyle change doing breakfast TV.
Monique would have been great. I even think Dr Chris would have bought a freshness to the show. I just really dont enjoy Shirvo hosting and he seems out of place to me.
Monique was never going to happen. They aren’t going to put two women on together after the Today fiasco. Also Dr Chris hasn’t been tested with Nat or the Sunrise family. They had to go with someone familiar to the Sunrise audience and that person is Matt Shirvington.
I doubt the Adele thing made their decision, however the fallout was advantageous to Shirvo, allowing him to showcase himself and push ahead in the queue. (much like a star player getting injured and the backup coming up and showing himself to be better and ending up being the starter)
Not sure it would be great to just parachute him straight into the main gig. Perhaps if he was interested to do some weekend or Morning Show hostings first?
Personally I think Seven made a good decision in choosing Matt S.![]()
Yes, at this present time, with what they’ve got, Shirvo is the best option.
Had Kochie wanted to leave at the end of this year and they wanted the Dr then he could have filled in from July- Dec and done Friday’s to build his Sunrise profile but that obviously wasn’t to be.
Kochie is leaving this week and right now Shirvo is the best they have.
So who will they replace him with?
Someone? Lol
Just like they have given people opportunities on weekend Sport in 7News Melbourne.
It’s how people grow and gain experience… promotions.
Well, someone certainly let their feelings known.
Shirvo isn’t my first choice but he does have the potential to be great so I’m looking forward to him settling in on weekdays.
Side note: I miss Mitch…
- Shirvington is the BEST choice
- There was a better option

I reckon this was a safe option for seven and the show. Cause unlike TODAY they always keep changing since the Lisa debacle
Shirvo’s appointment is one of those things, like everyone else has said is a safe move for Sunrise, appoint the most relevant fill-in presenter the show has, but I do agree that he isn’t really a serious news kind of guy. Hopefully with the guidance of Nat and everyone else, he can become one.
Kochie was really a financial guy when he started on the show, and his interviewing style isn’t patricianly brilliant compared to Karl on TODAY, yet he over 21 years became more competent each passing day, surely Matt deserves a fair go as well! I personally would’ve liked to have seen Musher get the gig as I think his seniority should’ve been rewarded but I think that Matt was the most logical choice.
But going frim a prime time newreader role to a breakfast show would be a backward step in a career.
Like we didn’t already know…
I’ve not watched him present but he just seems so…young IYKWIM. I’m very used to watching older people though so that probably shapes my view somewhat
Matt’s 44 now.
Kochie was 43 here: Sunrise: May 17, 1999 | Partial bulletin | 7NEWS Vault - YouTube
Shirvo is the best option there after the Doran debacle led to his falling out of graces with the network execs.
Perhaps this is Sunrise taking a new direction by choosing a non-traditional “journalist” for the gig. Nat, Eddie, Mon, Doran and a slew of others have that hard news background and can help support the show in that way. Shrivo brings something different to Sunrise and the ensemble of talents is what has always made the show so successful.
probably just forgotten but what was this?
He didn’t listen to Adele’s new album before an expensive exclusive interview in London with her, and was found out in the interview which she then pulled out from and embarrassed Seven and wasted their money.
How long has it been since they made a non-safe move at Sunrise?
