Sunrise (2020-Feb 2025)

Agree. Cheap and nasty. Thank goodness Today show doesn’t have those mascot gimmicks anymore :face_vomiting:

I saw that. It seems to happen about once a year. Ten years on, perhaps it goes to show no other duo will ever be more synonymous with the Sunrise brand than Kochie and Mel.

Wednesday 26 January-

Sam Mac is back presenting weather this morning.

I would move Monique to weekday newsreader and bring in Natarsha Belling as host with Matt on weekends.

It might have taken a legal case, a forced apology, protests and six years but this morning signs of some learning. Malarndirri McCarthy a guest for Hot Topics. A very small but needed step.

Malarndirri was great this morning. Very well spoken and sensible comments.

On another topic, I noticed that both Sunrise and Today were talking live to the relative of Charlise Mutton at the same time. Is that because in Brisbane the Sunrise interview was slightly delayed due to our local news perhaps?

Malarndirri has appeared on Today four times this month.

Yes- she’s been a regular on Today for a couple of years now. Obviously, easier facilitated given Nine has a Darwin bureau but still great to see her appear on Sunrise again. Hopefully, it’s more often.

I got the impression that Sunrise pre-recorded that interview. Perhaps given the sensitivity of the subject and what’s happened in similar situations on Today??

If Monique moves to weekday news to cover Eddy’s maternity leave, a few people who could temporarily replace her on Weekend Sunrise:

  • Mel Doyle (unlikely)
  • Sam Armytage (if she’s still contracted to the network and wants some extra work, she’d be good, but again, very unlikely)
  • Natarsha Belling (would seem the most likely option, but may not want to work 7 days a week if she continues with her podcast)
  • Angela Cox
  • Rebecca Maddern (meaning she’d have to fly back to Melbourne after Saturdays show to read the Melbourne news, then fly back to Sydney for Sundays show etc.)

Another option, though unlikely, is to trial one of the Sunrise regulars who has less experience presenting a Seven show, such as Dr Ginni Mansberg, Jane Caro, Sharri Markson (if Sky let her) etc.

Huh? The names I suggested were replacements to host on weekends if Mon is to cover Eddy on news - not suggestions to read weekday news.

As for weekday news, I think it’s highly likely it will be a woman covering the role because they seem to like gender balance across the desk.

I suspect, like Weekend Today often do with Jayne, Weekend Sunrise will simply promote Sally to co-host and use a variety of reporters and anchors from across the network to fill the arguably less important newsreader position.

Kendall Gilding has done it a few times, reporters from the Syd newsroom are also an option. You could even have news presented from interstate if local talent isn’t available. All you’d have to do is put the location as ‘newsroom’ or ‘ Sunrise news centre’ etc and it’d be fine.

I doubt Monique will cover Eddy’s maternity leave - it’ll be a rotation of the usual faces and perhaps a couple of new ones.

Let’s worry about it when the time comes. ATM we’re basically mocking a schedule.

I guess next week we’ll see… as Eddy finishes on Friday.

  • Mel Doyle - that ship has sailed. She’ll only appear now as a guest for her other projects.
  • Sam Armytage - also won’t happen. ‘Farmer’ is her seeing out her contract.
  • Natarsha Belling - I can’t see her working 7 days for an extended period, but they may put her on call as an occasional fill in.
  • Angela Cox - they’ve been marketing her pretty hard towards Sydney news. Doubt they’ll move her back to Sunrise now.
  • Rebecca Maddern/Kendall Gilding - I don’t see 7 flying talent interstate, it’s too much of a COVID risk.

Prediction: A combo of Angie Asimus, Sally Bowrey and Monique Wright.

Not sure if this is serious or a joke, but its worth noting Prue hasn’t appeared on Sunrise for years.

Because of a particular incident on a hot topics segment. I hope she never returns to Sunrise.
