Really great @blackbox podcast with Michael Pell

Hard pass on listening to anything he ever has to say.

It was actually a really good interview. He came across as a really nice, genuine guy, who also maintains a strong hold on his work.

I’d say well done to Michael on doing great things on Sunrise. He’ll mark 11 years in the role in a few months, equalling how long Mel Doyle was on the show.

Agreed. I have never been a massive Pell fan, but this was a really good interview.

Same. I had my somewhat unfounded opinions, but I really enjoyed that chat. Thanks for sharing.

I think everyone on here needs to have a listen to that interview - not only was it fantastic but it answers a lot of questions and addresses a lot on what is talked about in this thread!

I’ve been thinking the same. Usually noticeable in his first few sentences.

Look I know that not many like him (me included) but to be fair he does make some interesting talking points in that interview.

It would be quite bad to write someone’s interview off based on who they are (as I’ve learnt over the years and yes I was quite guilty of that too).

Emily Angwin also reporting from Melbourne this weekend.

Different approach to intro covid story this morning at the beginning of the program.
Similar to weekdays with Mon and Matt both doing the opener, then Mon in front of the screen for the covid summary, but instead of the large panel like on weekdays, she was just in front of the smaller panel, then crossed back to Matt to cross to reporters.

Why have they not added a sports presenter back in? The opener with just the 3 of them at the desk looks a bit naff.

Also, Emily Angwin is very 7 News Melbourne…

Agree, there are so many options in-house such as Matt Shirvington, Matt Carmichael, Michelle Bishop and Mel McLaughlin.

But I suspect that as long as Weekend Today don’t have a sport presenter then Weekend Sunrise will follow suit. It’s also probably a small cost-saving, and gives Sally more airtime.

I guessed I just judged the interview based on the title “…accuses Today of copying his show”

I’m seriously tired of that narrative and I would like to take every opportunity to point out to him that “his show” is oftentimes a carbon copy of a certain US breakfast program - down to graphic elements, format, studio, etc. The “Today copies us!” bs is so damn juvenile at this point and he does it about every other month. I don’t know him personally but at least in almost every interview he seems to have no professionalism or tact.

He does acknowledge that there are many similarities with the US shows too - it’s an interesting interview and this was a very small part of it.

You may not like him, but he clearly says that a lot of the elements are drawn from breakfast tv shows from around the world and are not unique to Australia.

The whole notion of his comments were based around Today simply taking what works on Sunrise and using it in their show.

After that podcast ep, my opinion of him has most definitely changed. I was very much in the “I want attention” camp but it seems even he has acknowledged he’s grown up.

I don’t usually compliment the weekend show, but I thought the presentation of this was so much better than weekdays…higher definition screen, brighter lighting, not feeling dizzy from the pointless JIB sweeps, and a nice combination of a standing presentation and a full-screen graphic. Nicely done :+1:

These COVID summarys stories that air at the top of each hour pre-recorded or live?

They look great!

You do obviously realise they had protracted legal proceedings with Simon Reeve claiming the role was redundant.

They need hold that line for a bit longer at least.
