The much-anticipated Big Brother Australia Season 16 premiered on 10 to 774k placing it second in its timeslot.

That compares to the last season on Seven that launched to 500,000 in November 2023 but quickly lost audience. Prior to that, the 2022 season launch had attracted 682,000 (excluding BVOD). The last season on Nine in 2012 launched to a 5-city audience of 1.067 million.

The result also compares to other reality shows on 10 this year where I’m A Celebrity launched to 905k, Survivor to 527k and later 637k while MasterChef had 676k. The Amazing Race Celebrity Edition had 684k for its first episode.

Elsewhere, My Kitchen Rules was the top entertainment show with just over one million viewers while The Golden Bachelor’s final group date topped 700k. Spicks And Specks continued to underperform for ABC steady on 361k while Portrait Artist Of The Year dropped 90k to 553k for its second episode.

Later, 60 Minutes slipped to 619k, its lowest rating of the year, but still won the timeslot. It was ahead of the two-part The Girl Who Caught A Killer on Seven with 549k and 367k while Ghosts Australia’s third episode got a big boost from the lead in to pick up an extra 200k viewers.

9News Late did well to get 442k as The Forsytes Series premiered on ABC to 304k. The NCIS: Tony & Ziva FTA preview had over 200k for 10 later in the night as well.

A slight delay to Nine News in Sydney and Melbourne saw Seven 60k ahead at 6pm. 10 News+ had its highest though still modest rating since August.

Meanwhile Weekend Sunrise saw a big drop in audience to 337k though still ahead of Weekend Today with 258k.

Pacific Championships - Men’s Cup – Final on Nine had 612k in the afternoon.

Given the amount of heavy promotion 10 threw at BB I’m sure they’re severely disappointed in that result. Only just beat Golden Bachelor on Nine.

Well done 10 on BB - Put up a fight in total viewers (even if 3rd in slot) and a demo winner too.

other then celeb, it might be the biggest same day launch for a show on 10 this year

10 won’t be thrilled with that number, we’re probably (foolishly TBH) hoping for the magic million, high 700k is actually better than I expected, thought it’d be on-par with Seven’s and might crash and burn.

The bvod figure might be a little concerning especially given Golden Bachelor and MKR’s. Seven and Nine’s shows held up rather well considering, particularly Nine’s you could argue all things considered.

We’ll have to wait for on-demand and DVR catch-up, as well as the post-broadcast live stream numbers (if they’ll be available).

The big key demo results in broadcast alone would be pleasing to 10 though and could be a battle area with Nine’s Love Island for younger viewers. I think BB will do best among sort of 18-49s, while LI will skew younger 16-39s.

A small jump with 10News+? Big Brother did well (for 10’s standards). It did beat Nine’s Golden Bachelor. Will see how the Daily Shows go.

Nine’s afternoon Rugby League did well too.

Well going by the audience. It’s pulled new people back into Sunday viewing as it didn’t really touch its competition.

Can we have BB’s 5 city breakdown?

Big Brother’s return to 10 did quite well, but its national reach was way behind MKR and The Golden Bachelor.

I don’t think 10 would be disappointed at all, those ratings are very good for their current standards. And it won its slot in all demos. Rated better than I expected.

10 would be pretty happy with these BB numbers - they hardly ever see results like this, and given their lead-in pulled only about a tenth of 7/9’s audience, it’s a great start!

I don’t think they be disappointed at all. I didn’t expect it to get as high as it did. I didn’t even think promotion was that heavy besides being on their own network.

Note to self: BVOD is counted as part of “average”.

Then remember that BB wasn’t uploaded until 10.50, about halfway through Perth broadcast.

I have seen BB being advertised in shopping centres. And as mentioned in the BB thread, at train station platforms in Sydney and Perth CBD as well.

I think I saw one external promotion. I have seen better promotion for I’m a celebrity.

BB was well ahead of the competition in the key demos where 10 was not far behind behind Seven and Nine in network share.

If this holds majority audience, next year they can launch a 9pm companion show on a 10 multi and keep that extra audience

The Big Brother launch figure has always been the highest before it drops off a lot. Did well in the demos but will have more competition this week against Love Island.
