It was another Olympic wipe out as Nine dominated all time slots across Sunday. The second Sunday of the Games saw the top program main channel segment average almost 2 million national viewers, the highest number in five days. There was a similar result for Night Session 2 as viewers embraced Olympic viewing on a Sunday night. However, fewer stayed up for the late night session than had over the weekend.

That saw Nine with another +50% share, though down five on the previous Sunday. Most of the lost share went to Seven that was up almost three and ABC that was up two. 10 posted a small gain and SBS was steady.

Nine News was notable for winning the 6pm news battle with a margin of 455k for the highest rating for any news bulletin so far this year. Weekend Today in Paris also posted a big win at breakfast as Weekend Sunrise had its lowest rating of the year.

Dancing With The Stars with a +2 hour broadcast did very well to make the top five and average 780,000 to help keep Seven competitive.

ABC News managed a decent audience with a Vera repeat making the top 30 while nothing out of 10’s prime time made the top 30 reach table with the 5pm news managing to rank 21st.

In the afternoon Sunday Afternoon AFL averaged 373k, up 40k on last week while the NRL was steady with an impressive 536k.

While still owning everything and numbers up being a Sunday (albeit down on last Sunday)… Nine were unable to replicate Seven’s equivalent day at Tokyo 2020, which IIRC saw numbers soar with the athletics and possibly Peter Bol’s heat, with something like 3m national average (including 7mate) and Seven News with a 2000s number of like 1.7m metro broadcast, including 500 or 600k in Sydney and Melbourne.

Gem’s audiences also declined from the afternoon into the night, perhaps reflective of their decision to stick with the golf, which turned out not a great one, both Aussies missing medals. So many other events could’ve been shown and possibly captivated more audiences.

While the main channel perhaps made the wrong decision not putting all the track and field on Gem (which would’ve seen a mammoth share) like Seven did and concentrated on the other sports, could’ve still crossed to athletics or as-live for Aussies and say the anticipated high jumpers, while the Joker v Alcarez gold and later the women’s road race with Phil Liggett’s final call could’ve been featured.

A lot ended up on 9Now, though the bvod figures from yesterday indicate a mass turn on there, so good for Nine’s digital arm and those sponsors.

Guessing with swimming over some people may be tuning out, and they did spend quite a bit on track and field events without Aussie’s in them. People in AFL states may of also switched over to Seven in the Afternoon given how close the match was.

Agreed - every time I switched over to 9GEM, they were airing Golf, Golf and more Golf - don’t think either channel carried the Beach Volleyball match involving Australia - at least Nine covered the Water Polo, which had another thrilling penalty finish.

THE AUSTRALIAN WOMEN’S WATER POLO TEAM STING HUNGARY IN A THRILLER WIN

The 9Network’s Sunday broadcast of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 (up until 2.00am Monday AEST) secured a National Total TV Reach of 9.651 million across Channel 9, 9Gem and 9Now.**

Olympic Games Paris 2024 Day 9 Night Session (19:00-21:00) was Australia’s No.1 program with Total People and all key demographics. It registered a National Total TV Reach of 4.979 million, a Total TV National Audience of 1.972 million and a BVOD audience of 247,000. In this session, audiences were treated to the Equestrian Dressage Individual Grand Prix Freestyle Final, with Tokyo 2020 Australian Olympian Simone Pearce riding alongside Australian riders Jayden Brown and Will Matthew.

Olympic Games Paris 2024 Day 9 Night Session 2 (21:00-22:30) was Australia’s No.2 program with Total People and all key demographics. The broadcast, which saw tennis champions Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz battle it out for a gold medal in the Men’s Single Tennis Competition, secured a National Total TV Reach of 3.998 million, a Total TV National Audience of 1.603 million and a BVOD audience of 231,000. Viewers also enjoyed the beginning of the Women’s Road Race with Australian gold medalist Grace Brown back on the bike riding alongside teammates Ruby Roseman-Gannon and Lauretta Hanson.

Olympic Games Paris 2024 Day 9 Late (22:30-24:00) dominated its timeslot across Australia with Total People and all key demographics. It achieved a National Total TV Reach of 1.986 million, a Total TV National Audience of 727,000 and a BVOD audience of 111,000. As well as the remainder of the Women’s Road Race, viewers watched on as the Australian Women’s Water Polo team (The Stingers) stung Hungary, with a thriller win taking them to the quarter-finals.

9News was Australia’s No.1 bulletin of the night with all key demos and Total People. The combined national bulletins achieved a National Total TV Reach of 3.060 million, a Total TV National Audience of 1.666 million and a BVOD audience of 169,000.

The 9Network was the No.1 network across the 5 City Metro with Total People and all key demographics, with massive shares of 60.79% with People 25-54, 66.90% with People 16-39 and 50.13% with Total People.

I noticed Nine are now split coding the 9Gem feed daytime “Replays” session (~8am to 5pm) as two, “early” and “late”, with the “Day” being titled as the previous day of course.

They mustn’t have been that happy with the first number of days’ ratings being averaged across 9 hours, given they’re also re-packaged segments from Gem overnight including the hosts, when there’s no live surfing in our morning.

And as you’d expect, the later portion is drawing in more viewers.

Looks like this was beaten by Nine’s m/c old movie re-run on 9Go! Space Cowboys (2000). Which came on straight after the Olympics news overflow. It ranked above 10’s movie in the 25-54s broadcast re-ordered list.

Nine would be happy their prime time m/c alternatives are also drawing in viewers, helping network shares and even if not watching Olympics at that time, viewers are staying with them.

News is slightly better than other nights last week - if AFL went for a few more minutes (i.e. just over 6pm), then the number would’ve been a lot closer for news.

TCN Sydney just completely killing it, it’s not even competitive on any day in anything, even the ABC by the looks of it, may as well just run the test pattern, especially ATN

You can’t really make a reasonable day for day comparison to the Tokyo Olympics which was much more time zone friendly. Tokyo had all the Athletics finals perfectly sitting in primetime and this time around it’s the heats.

Also factor in that two of the biggest markets were in lockdown for the last Olympics, so that definitely would have resulted in higher viewership too. The Olympics yesterday across Nine still had almost a 10million viewer reach, which means it’s going out to a huge audience. It’s probable that the average viewer in Sydney and Melbourne watched the coverage for longer last time which resulted in higher averages (unfortunately we don’t have peak numbers to compare too).

All in all the numbers are big for the start of the second week across all hours of the day, when sometimes at this point the competition starts to lose a bit of steam.
