The first night of the summer ratings period saw a narrow two-point win to Nine as ABC had its best Sunday share since March.

After news, 60 Minutes topped the night with Planet Earth III also making the top 20, up slightly on its debut episode.

Seven’s best was 7News Spotlight with The Fugitive just making the top 20.

ABC had the top entertainment offerings of the night with Annika in the top 5 and up 60k week-on-week while Joanna Lumley’s Britain improved by 45k. Both will also do well in catch up viewing.

Meanwhile the new season of The Bachelors got off to a poor start for 10 with just 224,000 metro linear viewers. That was down from the previous season’s debut episode that had 309,000 and is the lowest start to a season ever for the franchise. 10 will be hoping for some BVOD viewing to booth numbers.

Earlier, The breakfast contest was closer than usual for a Sunday with Sunrise ahead by just 9,000.

James Bond again delivered with 9Gem securing a +4% share to top the multichannels.

The pulsating AFLW grand final just made the top 20, however both FTA and pay TV audiences were lower than the season 7 decider (225,000 and 99,000 respectively) on November 27 last year.

Poor start for the new season of The Bachelors, given Love Island and Big Brother are also showing in the same week.

Terrible figures for The Bachelors.

So it’s Big Brother versus The Bachelors tonight - a fascinating battle in the race to the bottom.

I really cannot understand Seven’s logic in running 2 and half hours of BB tonight.

And here I thought Big Brother was going to win the battle of the biggest flop this year. The Bachelors has well and truly outdone even itself. DOA.

Even more embarrassing to be beaten by both Spotlight and 60 Mins in the demos. Even crusty old Border Security did better.

From Nine:

  • Nine takes out the top 2 programs live streamed yesterday against FTA broadcasters
  • 60 Minutes won its timeslot with Total People and GS + Child across the 5 City Metro and in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane
  • 60 Minutes recorded a Live + VOD BVOD Audience of 43,000
  • 9News Sunday was the No. 1 news bulletin in Melbourne with Total People
  • 9News Sunday recorded a Live BVOD Audience of 43,000
  • David Attenborough’s Planet Earth III was a timeslot winner with GS + Child across the 5 City Metro
  • David Attenborough’s Planet Earth III recorded a Live BVOD Audience of 25,000
  • Australian Open Golf - Day 4 was a timeslot winner with Total People across the 5 City Metro and in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth
  • Australian Open Golf - Day 4 recorded a Live BVOD Audience of 11,000
  • Weekend Today won its timeslot with Total People and all key demos across the East Coast

I think The Bachelors will be hard to judge this season with the whole 10 Play first strategy.

Currently the first and second episodes of Bachelors are in the top 10 BVOD list - episode 1 is 2nd.

Nine won the east coast with Seven winning Adelaide and Perth. Although 10 did better in demos it was Nine that won 25-54 and Seven that won 16-39.

Today’s 77,000 audience is Melbourne was huge and on of its highest for the year 30k ahead of Sunrise that was just ahead of Weekend B.

Yeah it will be interesting to see how many viewers actually pre-watched it on catch up as it was available on the weekend. That might boost it a bit more when the full Voz report comes out later (not sure if the entire weekends views count or just yesterdays).

It is new content in the non-ratings period so 10 obviously knew it wouldn’t rate. The strategy seems focused on SVOD and BVOD viewers so I think anything over 200k overnight total people would be a pass mark.

The fact that it couldn’t attract at least 100k in Melbourne on Seven would have to be concerning for the AFL. The Brisbane figures were okay.

To get rid of it fast as possible, given its the finale on Wednesday.

We have really hit rock bottom if any network apart from SBS considers those acceptable ratings, even for non ratings.

Bad idea to use the triple Bachelors gimmick twice in one year.

I would have gone with a different show entirely. They know Love Island airs this same time every year. They should have gone with something brand new.

The Bachelor’s first episode had a national BVOD audience of 27,000. That figure excludes people who watched the episode on 10Play before the TV broadcast.

Yeah I wondered if the weekend viewing would have counted but I guess not. Which is a strange approach by Ten as having it up over the weekend would have likely reduced it’s overall audience in overnights. I guess it’s summer and getting some extra viewers on the weekend still gives more advertising revenue than is shown here. Would be interested to see how many people actually watched it on the weekend though.

Still full props to Ten for trying to launch something in December and at least giving new content during non-ratings. I don’t think the Bachelors was the right move though - maybe something that requires less commitment like a primetime gameshow would’ve worked better at this time of the year (or even Gladiators?). Although at the same time, could be the reason Bachelors was left till December as they didn’t expect too much from it being the 11th season and the other new shows launching in January probably have a better chance of success.
