Another Australian Open concluded with last night’s final helping to deliver Nine the highest network share of the year with 40.7% watching the main channel coverage. That saw all other networks record their lowest Sunday shares of the year.

The final averaged 1.322 million metro viewers to easily top the night with the Presentations that followed also over one million. The result was down on the 2022 final that had 1.613 million (54.4% share) but higher than the COVID impacted 2021 final that had 1.173 million. Results in previous year included 1.524 million in 2020 and 1.589 million in 2019 and 1.73 million the last time Seven broadcast the Open in 2018.

Over on Seven, after a 200k win for Seven News the BBL Knockout saw 348,000 tune in, down slightly on 2022’s 368,000. That was nominally below ABC and 10’s programming for at least part of the broadcast. Foxtel’s broadcast at 214,000 was up from 172,000 last year.

Meanwhile 10’ lineup was topped by the final of The Bachelors that concluded with a season high 372,000 for the Final Decision and 356,000 for the rest of the program. The show’s low linear ratings across this season have been countered by good Total TV number in key demos. The previous Bachelor season was in 2021 that had 629,000 and 578,000.

ABC’s line up offered ABC News with a plus 500k result while a Vera repeat made the top 10 as one of the few scripted shows on air last night.

At breakfast Sunrise was 30k ahead of Today

Ahhh the negative story about The Bachelor makes sense now (in news.com.au) - it out-rated the cricket on TV last night!

Lucky 10 avoided that turkey then huh?

(I actually don’t know if I am being sarcastic or not now…)

The Australian Open men’s final attracted another massive audience, especially in Melbourne.

Top Gun: Maverick made the pay TV top 20 shows, a month after it was available on Paramount+.

Royal Rumble (the first WWE event under the new deal with Foxtel which sees Binge and Fox8 picking up the broadcast) also did well.

It is good that Ten was able to remain competitive on the night and offer an alternative to people who don’t like sport.

Not sure Seven will be thrilled at the figures for the Big Bash, it has definitely lost its value this year.

It will be fascinating to see MAFS versus Australian Idol tonight.

That’s a terrific result for Nine, FTA ain’t dead just yet, all eyes onto tonight and this week now.

Good to see a strong Australian Open audience for the Men’s final.

The Bachelor’s did well considering I was expecting it to just fizz out. Impressive to get a fair lift from previous episodes and beat the Cricket.

I mean, it is dead really. I think deep down everyone knows that (execs included) but of course they can’t admit it. But it’s nice to something get over a million and remind us of the times of old

From 10:

The Bachelors Australia Grand Finale:

  • #1 commercial series on BVOD with 110 million minutes viewed.
  • #1 entertainment show in under 50s and 16 to 39s.
  • #2 entertainment show in 25 to 54s.
  • #2 in its timeslot in under 50s, 25 to 54s and 16 to 39s.

The Bachelors Australia Grand Finale – The Final Decision:

  • Biggest overnight audience of the year.
  • #1 entertainment show in 25 to 54s.
  • #2 entertainment show in under 50s and 16 to 39s.
  • #2 in its timeslot in under 50s, 25 to 54s and 16 to 39s.

I think it’s a bit disingenuous by 10 to have been excluding the tennis and they’ve done it for years now, sneakily not recognising it as “entertainment” (obviously “sport”), rather than what networks should and often do use “non-news”.

This is what their true result was, even in their sought after key demos and the margin is light years:

Seems pretty standard industry practice that entertainment shows = non news, current affairs and sport.

Rare to see Brisbane relatively low and Adelaide and especially Perth (for Nine) rather high, including an extremely rare low for Seven News in Perth (although still ahead of Nine’s late edition) with the middle of the AO Final happening then. Same sort of thing happened on the night of Ash Barty’s Final last year. Nine would be pleased to see those west coast market results.

Pat Welsh was signing off 7 News Brisbane for the final time that might have impacted overall numbers as many switched over half way.

Wasn’t that the previous night?

Outside of Covid, it is one of the lowest rated Men’s finals in quite some time… not helped by Novak’s unpopularity.

It would have to be since the early 2000s at least that the men’s final started to become event television with 2m plus. Lleyton Hewitt’s final was 3m plus.

Unless Kyrgios makes a final, the trajectory in coming years is sub 1m.

Tsitsipas has traditionally drawn an audience too - wonder what it would have rated if it was Novak vs someone else

245k also watched on 9Now + who knows how many on Stan Sport. In any case there was less than 300k difference in the live TV ratings between the Nadal Medvedev final last year and this years final proving he is not as unpopular as some people think.

Exactly what people aren’t factoring is that more and more are live streaming sport. So there’s a good additional 300k plus viewers which means it’s at least a 1.6million average finale. Aus Open and Djokovic do still have plenty of pulling power.
