The Australian Idol Grand Final delivered for Seven last night with the Winner Announced segment just under 600k in preliminary numbers while the rest of the final drew in 573,000 to be the show’s highest rated episode of the season. The final ranked 6th in the demons with the winner segment 7th.

That saw Seven with a 4-point increase to its best Sunday share of the survey and the main channel’s equal highest Sunday of the year. Across the series the competition averaged 436,000 in the overnights with regular episodes ranging from 370,000 (on a Thursday) to last Sunday’s 464,000. The show picked up an average of 40k in time shifting while BVOD numbers were up to 70k.

Elsewhere ABC held onto its audience share with Nine, 10 and SBS lost share from last Sunday.

Earlier Seven News was up to be the number on show of the night with wins in all markets despite an NRL lead in for Sydney. Afternoon AFL provided another good lead in with +300k. Startstruck that followed Idol managed 258,000 in preliminary numbers to be Seven’s best post reality result on a Sunday this year.

Elsewhere, after six consecutive number one rankings on a Sunday, Married at First Sight was second but with a similar audience to last week. 60 Minutes that followed did well to post its second-highest audience of the year up against the Idol final. The afternoon NRL game dropped to a Sunday low of 202k.

Meanwhile Survivor’s penultimate audience was again over 500k but down 25k from last Sunday. ABC’s Death in Paradise was down 15k while In Our Blood slipped from its debut episode to a disappointing 182k.

In the breakfast slot it was a very close contest with Weekend Sunrise just 10k ahead of Weekend Today.

A surprisingly good day for Seven across the board, expected Married to finally do the magic million, heard from a regualar watcher that it was a bit disappointing with a lot of re-hashes

Hardly worth splitting the show for that tiny difference.

Thats a great fight back by Seven.

I just wonder how Idol is going to affect The Voice because I think people are tired of the constant talent quest show where the winner goes on to do nothing.

Both the finales of Australian Idol and Starstruck posted their highest audiences of the season.

In Perth, Australian Idol grand final came second in the timeslot, despite the result having been revealed on social media by then due to the 3-hour time difference.

Had over 100k leading-in to 6pm there.

The same was true for the other reality shows, however. Perth viewers could have seen what was happening in MAFS and Survivor, so I don’t think it impacts one show more than the others.

Isn’t that a bit of cheeky and misleading of 7 to be be claiming consolidated ratings of different AFL matches into one line/program?

I think for transparency they should have been listed as separate programs/lines since they had different start/finish times as well as being different games.

And also that my guess is the 45k for Sydney is the Swans only and excluded WCE vs GWS?

And what happened to the ADL figure?

SEVEN’S AFL: SUNDAY AFTERNOON FOOTBALL is made up of

Sydney 01:00 PM Sydney v Hawthorn
Melbourne 03:00 PM Essendon v Gold Coast
Brisbane 02:00 PM Essendon v Gold Coast
Perth 03:00 PM West Coast v GWS

Channel 7 has been presenting its ratings like that for years. I really don’t see the difference between that and state based news being aggregated.

In terms of the ratings, both Sydney teams would have been on yesterday so it could be either but 45K seems like a normal Swans early afternoon ratings in Sydney (game finished before 4 o’clock)

There would have been no Adelaide broadcast on FTA yesterday as both Adelaide teams played the day before.

At least the news is usually on at the same time locally.
The Swans game was on at 1pm vs 3pm in MEL/PER for their respective matches.

Yeah, I am really not sure it matters

The key point is surely how 7 uses it to attract advertisers, no?

Yes, but I think it’s misleading to advertisers too when there’s no transparency about what game / what time.

And that Seven conveniently excluded the impact of WCE vs GWS in the Sydney figure since it would have dropped the 45k figure quite a lot (assuming that it was shown in SYD).

Anyway, I’ll leave it at that.

I’m fairly sure advertisers would have to access to detailed information such as what game aired in what market.

Of course it was shown in Sydney, on 7mate. All non-Victorian teams’ games must shown on FTA into their local markets. But it would have been under a different coding, “Sunday Night Football” perhaps, whereas the “Sunday Afternoon Football” title is accurate for the same game in Perth given the timezone difference.

I feel this was already discussed the other week, the coding is clear “Sunday Football” (not referencing any individual game), there was one yesterday in each market bar Adelaide, hence the market splits represent the one game.

Whenever there’s more than one, it’s coded as “Game 2” (as seen in RegionalTAM’s Regional WA often).

The WCE v GWS game in Sydney was coded as SEVEN’S AFL: SUNDAY AFTERNOON FOOTBALL-GAME 2

I’m sure the advertisers in Sydney would be aware.
It’s similar for hot seat with a staggered schedule also.
Or when certain shows air in 7two (home and away) but the numbers are all added together and presented as channel 7
